TROY, N.Y. - Albany forced 23 turnovers and held Bucknell to its lowest point total since 1997-98 as it defeated Bucknell 64-37 in women's basketball action Saturday evening at McDonough Field House.
The Bison, who trailed by as many as 32 points, were held under 40 points for the first time since a 52-35 loss at UMBC on Nov. 23, 1997 as they connected on 13 of 52 field goals for a season-low 25.0 percent. The Great Danes made 26 of 70 (37.1 percent) from the floor.
Bucknell took its first, and final lead of the game on a layup by Brooke Tomovich with 13:07 left in the first half. The senior took a pass from Kristina Collymore on the left side of the basket and spun to her right to give the Bison the 7-6 advantage. However, that was the final points for the Bison for nearly seven minutes as Albany reeled off 15 consecutive points to take a commanding 21-7 lead.
Lindsey Hollobaugh ended the Great Danes' run with a fast-break layup on the right side, but that was the closest Bucknell would get the rest of the way as Albany extended its lead to 33-14 at intermission. The 19-point spread was its largest of the first 20 minutes of play.
The Bison opened the second half with a 6-0 run, highlighted by two points each from Hollobaugh, Tomovich and Hope Foster, as their defense forced 11 missed shots and held the Great Danes scoreless for more than five minutes.
Hollobaugh, who led Bucknell with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to post her third career double-double, cut the Bucknell deficit to 12 points (37-25) after she converted another fast-break layup where she went coast-to-coast after grabbing the defensive rebound. Jen Schumacher, who was one of three Great Danes in double-figures with 13 points, fouled Hollobaugh to send her to the line where she made the ensuing free throw with 12:08 remaining on the clock.
Albany outrebounded Bucknell by a 49-44 margin, with 19 of the caroms coming on the offensive end. The Bison, who had 12 offensive rebounds, were led by Hollobaugh and Foster, who had 10 boards.
Foster added eight points, while Brooke Tomovich also contributed eight as Bucknell had just five players make field goals.
Maree Jones led Albany with 14 points, while Schumacher and Danielle Hutcheson added 13 apiece. Jones and Hutcheson each grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Albany turned the ball over just nine times. In the winning effort.
After playing five of its first six games away from Sojka Pavilion, Bucknell returns home Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. to host Buffalo. The first game of a doubleheader with the men will be the final game for the Bison until Dec. 18.
