RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Serra Sangar scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Manhattan forced 26 Bucknell turnovers to defeat the Bison 77-49 Sunday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium. Bucknell fell to 1-4 with the loss, while the Jaspers improved to 2-1.
Manhattan held Bucknell without a field goal until Brooke Tomovich broke the ice with 15:51 remaining in the first half by knocking down a jumper in the lane to cut the lead to 13-4. The Bison battled back to cut their deficit to six points at 21-15 and 23-17, but would not draw closer the rest of the game. Kesha Champion scored on a baseline jumper to make the score 23-17, but that was the last field goal Bucknell would score for nearly nine minutes as the Jaspers built a 34-21 lead.
Lindsey Geosits connected on a three-pointer, the 42nd of her career, to break Bucknell's nine-minute stretch without a field goal and narrow the gap to 34-24. However, a pair of free throws by Joann Nwafili and a layup off a steal in the backcourt by Donnette Reed extended the Jaspers lead to 38-24, their largest of the half. Geosits then made a pair of foul shots to trim the Bucknell halftime deficit to 38-26.
The Manhattan defense controlled the second half as it limited Bucknell to just two field goals in the first 14 minutes of play, and five overall after intermission. The Jaspers opened the half on a 14-1 run until Lindsey Hollobaugh scored on a jumper from the right wing just over five minutes into the half. That was the last field goal for the Bison until Hollobaugh made a fast break layup with 8:21 to play in the game. Hollobaugh finished the game with eight points on 3 of 5 shooting.
Tomovich led the Bison with nine points on 3 of 5 shooting from the field. As a team, Bucknell connected on just 13 of 38 (34.2 percent). Manhattan made 31 of 67 (46.3 percent) from the field, including 15 of 31 in the second half when it extended its lead out to as much as 34 points at 68-34.
Hope Foster and Kristina Collymore each grabbed five rebounds to pace the Bison, who were outrebounded 39-30, including 15-8 on the offensive glass.
Bucknell is back in action Saturday at Albany. The game is slated to tip-off at 5 p.m. in Albany, N.Y.
