PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The host Dukes of Duquesne staged a come-from-behind victory over visiting Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Rooney Field in women's lacrosse action, after the Bison led 7-3 at halftime. The win snapped a three-game winning streak for the Orange and Blue, and improved the Dukes' streak to three.
Senior Suzanne Raffaele led the Bison with four goals, all in the first half, and keeper Nicole Kallis had seven saves.
Duquesne's Ginger Flocco posted an incredible second-half performance to propel the Dukes' win, netting two of her four goals, including the tying score, in the second frame.
Raffaele scored first for the Bison to spark a three-goal spree, which put Bucknell up 3-0 with 21:09 remaining. Flocco put the Dukes on the board from Becca West's feed at 19:54, but freshman Victoria Field scored for the Orange and Blue in the 16th minute for a 4-1 advantage. Flocco once again found the back of the cage, this time from Lauren Mincher, to cut into the BU lead with 13:24 to go.
Sophomore Andrea Paraud scored at 9:36 for a 5-2 edge before Laura App closed out Duquesne's first half scoring with an unassisted goal at 2:38. Raffaele scored again at 1:48 and with :03 left on the clock for a 7-3 edge at the break.
Christi Madden opened the second stanza's scoring with an unassisted goal at 26:10 followed by Mulford's unassisted score at 17:12 to get the Dukes within two, 7-5. Bucknell sophomore Cora Preston found the back of the net just 29 seconds later for an 8-5 cushion, but Caroline Gallagher's score from Madden at 14:47 got the goal right back for Duquesne.
Bucknell again grabbed a three-goal (9-6) edge at 12:14 with an unassisted goal by junior Meredith Wright. Nearly seven minutes went by without a goal before Carrie Watkins scored at 5:36 and Mulford at 5:06 off a caused turnover to inch within a 9-8 game. Paraud gave the Bison a 10-8 lead with her unassisted goal at 3:25, but that would be the last score for the Orange and Blue. Flocco hit two unassisted scores at 3:10 and 1:49 to knot the game at 10-10, and Mulford threw in the game-winner with :41 seconds left on the game clock.
Duquesne's Shelley Rank played a solid second half in goal, stopping eight shots, including what could have been the tying score with :08 ticking. Sarah Pacini stopped four shots in the first frame.
Duquesne held a 25-22 edge in groundballs while the teams were even in shots (25) and draw controls (11).
Bucknell falls to 4-5 overall. The Bison continue their four-game road trip with a game at St. Francis (Pa.) at 3:30 p.m. on April 9. Duquesne improves to 6-4 overall.
