Bison Baseball Start the Weekend With A Split With Army

LEWISBURG, Pa. - On Saturday, Bucknell (19-10, PL 10-4) received a stunning pitching performance from the staff of Kevin Miller and Phil Futrick in a 2-1 win over the Black Knights of Army (11-17-1, PL 6-8) in game one. Futrick tied the Patriot League record for saves in a season with his ninth save versus Army and Miller improved to 6-0. The Bison dropped a 5-1 decision in game two.
Miller earned his sixth win of the season after pitching six scoreless innings against the Black Knights. Miller gave up one run in the seventh inning. The junior pitched 6.2 innings, before being replaced with rookie Phil Futrick. Miller allowed one run on six hits, while striking out eight Army batters.
The Bison scored their first run when Kyle Walter smashed a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth. The Bison took the 1-0 lead into the sixth inning and enhanced it when Sam Moss singled to centerfield and advanced to second on a throwing error by Army's pitcher, Justin Kashner. Moss then moved to third on a sacrifice by Brian Day. Brian Hirschberg flied out to right field, allowing Moss to tag-up and score on the play.
The Black Knights scored one run in the seventh inning.
Walter went 3-for-3 in game one, including a single, double, and the home run.
In game two, the Bison struggled with two costly errors in the first inning. R.J. Grant walked the lead-off, Josh Holden. Nate Stone then doubled and advanced to third on a throwing error by Ben Stoll, allowing Holden to score. Stone scored while Wes Bumgardner grounded out to Moss. The Black Knights took an early 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Stoll was able to reach first on a bunt. Stoll then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Moss. Hirschberg doubled to right field, sending Stoll over the plate.
With the Black Knights up 2-1, the Bison kept the second inning short. Army then came back in the third to score three more runs. After Grant walked Bumgardner, Schuyler Williamson singled through the left side. Walker Gorham then hit a single and advanced to third on a throwing error by Hirschberg. Both Bumgardner and Williamson scored on the play and improve the lead 4-1. Gorham crossed the plate on a double hit by Jeremy Stache.
Matt Daley replaced Grant on the mound and completed the game. Grant pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on four hits. Daley tallied 4.2 innings and only gave up two hits. Daley struck out three Army batters.
Hirschberg went 3-for-3 in game two, including a double.
The Bison return to Bucknell Field on Sunday, April 20 to host another doubleheader versus Army. The first pitch will be delivered at noon.
