LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team (21-12) bounced back with a 9-0 win over Towson (19-18), after a difficult loss at Penn State just a day earlier. The Bison recorded their fifth shutout of the season. Freshman Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Kyle Walter, hit a solid double and a triple and went 2-for-4 against the Tigers.
A stunning pitching performance by sophomore Tim Peacock assisted with the mid-week boost the Bison needed. The Orange and Blue took the 2-0 lead in the second inning. Walter doubled to center right and plated Ben Krentzman. Brian Day then singled up the middle allowing Walter to score.
In the fifth frame, the Tigers replaced Chris Rhoades with Steve Johnson on the mound. Sam Moss walked, but then crossed the plate on a double by Pete Wolf. Wolf advanced to third on the throw. Brian Hirschberg singled up the middle, plating Wolf and the Herd took a 4-0 lead.
Bucknell grabbed the most runs in the sixth inning. After B.J. Batterson and Ben Stoll walked, Towson once again went to the mound and replaced Johnson with Rafe Bridges. Moss was walked and loaded the bases. Wolf then reached on a fielder's choice and Batterson scored. Moss was out on the play. After Wolf stole second, Hirschberg then reached first on an error by the second baseman, allowing both Stoll and Wolf to score. The Bison completed the sixth, 7-0.
In the seventh, Walter tripled to deep right field and Batterson drove him home. Moss singled to right field and then was plated on a fielder's choice hit by Krentzman, in the bottom of the eighth.
Peacock pitched six complete innings only allowing four hits. Matt Daley replaced Peacock in the top of the sixth and pitched one inning with a clean slate. R.J. Grant came to the mound in the top of the seventh and gave up only one hit and struck out one batter. Closer Phil Futrick pitched the eighth frame allowing no hits, but struck out one and walked two.
First-place Bucknell will host their last four-game Patriot League series against Lafayette on April 26-27. Both doubleheaders will begin at noon. The Eugene B. Depew Field dedication will be held on Sunday at 11 a.m.
