Bison Baseball Drops Final Regular Season Game to George Washington

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team dropped its final regular season game, 17-5, to George Washington on Tuesday. The Bison completed the regular season with a 25-13 overall record, while George Washington improves to 30-11.
The Colonials took an early lead with two runs scored in the first. Ryan Roberson's single through the left side plated the first two runs. In the bottom of the first, Brian Hirschberg's single to right field plated Ben Stoll to cut the Colonial's lead in half. George Washington crossed the plate three times to take a 5-1 lead in the second. In the bottom of the frame, Phil Bunting began with a double and was hit in by B.J. Batterson's single to left field. Batterson scored on a single hit by Pete Wolf. The Bison narrowed the 5-3 gap.
The Bison pitching staff became uneasy in the third inning. After pitcher Tim Peacock walked two batters, Nick Yaeger replaced Peacock on the mound. With the bases loaded, Yaeger walked two and advanced two batters after hitting them with the pitch. Five runs scored on bases loaded walks, and two scored on a single hit by Tony Dokoupil, to increase the Colonials' 12-3 lead.
In the fifth, GW scored two runs and the Bison scored one run when Hirschberg was plated on Dave Garrisi's sacrifice bunt. The Colonials scored their last three runs in the sixth frame. Bucknell's Matt Capece scored on a single to left field by Gregg Ekimoff, but the Bison fell short by a final of 17-5.
Peacock pitched two innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits. Yaeger pitched 0.1 inning walking three and advancing two after hitting them with a pitch. He gave up five earned runs. Marc Cussatt pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Eric Steinbach gave up three earned runs in 1.1 innings. Jacob Moss, the closer, pitched one innings with a clean slate and striking out two.
Bucknell will have a week and a half off and will host the Patriot League Tournament on May 10-11. Navy, the number two seed, will play Lehigh in the first game on Saturday, May 10. The winner of that game will play Bucknell in a best-of-three series.
