REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - The Bucknell men's golf team jumped out to a great start with a season-best team score of 310 in the opening round of Monday's Rehoboth Beach Spring Invitational, but the Bison could not maintain that pace over the second 18 holes, shooting 328, and finished in eighth place overall.
Thanks to three scores in the 70s, Bucknell stood in a tie for third place after the first round, but the Bison had only one player break 80 in the afternoon and had to count an 87. Navy captured the team title with rounds of 297 and 312 for a total of 609, seven strokes better than runner-up George Washington.
Columbia (628) placed third, followed by Villanova (629), Drexel (636), Iona (637), Long Island (637) and Bucknell (638) in the 15-team field.
Freshman Tom Lane set the pace for Bucknell in the opening round with a three-over-par 75, but it was a pair of unheralded rookies that came up big for the Bison. Brian Troast shot 76 and Dave Dobrzynski 79 - career bests for both players. Abbie Valentine carded an 80 to round out Bucknell's scoring.
Alex Dolle, whose 83 was Bucknell's fifth score in the first-round, improved to a team-low 79 in round two. Lane and Valentine each shot 81, but Troast (87) and Dobrzynski (88) struggled in the afternoon and the Herd's team score slipped by 18 strokes.
Lane's 36-hole total of 156 put him in a tie for 15th place. Valentine finished 32nd and Dolle 33rd. Villanova's Henry Watson used a second-round 69 to take medallist honors by two shots over Navy's Billy Hurley and Brian Crum, along with GW's Brian Carroll.
The Bison will play in the St. Peter's Invitational on April 22 as a final tuneup prior to the Patriot League Championship in Bethlehem, Pa., on April 26-27.
