LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Melissa Montefusco, Suzanne Raffaele and Laura Nuss all tallied three points each in the women's lacrosse game against visiting Drexel, but it was not enough as the Dragons tallied the game-winning goal with :31 seconds remaining to win 8-7 on Tuesday, April 9.
Drexel's Katrine Rand carried the ball into the circle and scored unassisted with just over half a minute remaining to break a 7-7 tie, and complete a two-goal surge by the Dragon's for the come-from-behind victory.
The Bison got on the scoreboard first when Montefusco found Raffaele for a goal just 2:29 into the contest. Drexel responded 2:32 later when Jessica Giordani netted a pass from Rand to even the game. The Dragon's took a one goal lead just 1:48 later when Jen Bonini scored unassisted for the 2-1 advantage.
Both teams were quiet for nearly six minutes before Nuss found Raffaele with 17:28 remaining to get Bucknell back into a 2-2 tie. Drexel once again responded, scoring with 13:13 left in the frame on a Jaime Connahan goal from Kristyn Minnick, to go back up by one, 3-2. The back-and-forth game continued with a Montefusco free position goal just :49 seconds later to knot it at 3-3, and Nuss ended the scoring for the half with a free position goal with 5:50 left in the frame.
The Bison took their largest lead of the game 2:25 into the second stanza when Nuss tallied again on a free position shot to give the home team a 5-3 advantage. Drexel would counter with a Niki Shaffer goal, from Connahan, to bring it back to a one-goal game. The Dragon's did not stop there, however, scoring two more goals within 12 seconds of each other to take a 6-5 lead. Connahan took advantage of a free position shot at the 41:36 mark, and after collecting the ensuing draw, Shaffer found Rand in front of the net for the score at the 41:48 mark.
The Orange and Blue collected themselves and responded 1:24 later when Raffaele returned the earlier favor to Montefusco for the game-tying score. Bucknell regained the lead at 7-6 2:30 minutes later on Andrea Paraud's free position shot, but Drexel's Stephanie Hanshaw got the Dragon's back even with an unassisted score with 2:25 to play.
Both team's defense's went to work, shutting down several attempts in the final 2:25. Rand found a hole, however, and converted with just :31 seconds remaining to give Drexel the 8-7 lead. The Bison lost the draw, but gained control of the ball just seconds later and got a good shot off with over :20 seconds left. Dragon's goalie Shirley Sarker came up with the save to preserve the win.
Sarker finished the game with 11 saves on 24 Bucknell shots, while Bison goalkeeper Nicole Kallis registered 12 saves on 23 Drexel shots.
Bucknell falls to 6-6 overall and will be in action next when it travels to Colgate for a crucial Patriot League contest with the Raiders at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
