LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sean Magee pitched a four-hit, complete game victory as Bucknell (13-20, 4-4 Patriot League) defeated Navy (9-17, 4-4 Patriot League) 4-1 in the nightcap of a Patriot League doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bucknell Field. The Midshipmen won the opener 6-4 in eight innings.
Magee's complete game was the first of his career, and the right-hander upped his season record to 3-2. Navy starter Matt Cooney (0-4) pitched four and two-third innings in the nightcap and was handed the loss.
Magee and Cooney locked up in a pitcher's duel early on in game two, as neither starter allowed a hit through the first three and a half innings. Bucknell broke the ice in the bottom of the fourth when Larry Scheetz stroked a double down the left field line to lead off the inning. Eric Fishman traded places with Scheetz after ripping a double into right. Ben Krentzman drove in Fishman two batters later with a single to left.
Navy came back with one run in the fifth to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Brad Hager broke up Magee's no-hitter with a one-out triple into the right-center gap, and scored three batters later on Jason Guidos' RBI-single.
Bucknell added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 advantage. With one out, Sheetz whacked a ground-rule double, his third two-bagger of the doubleheader, off Cooney. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Navy reliever Ryan Naquin, and scored one batter later when Fishman reached on an error. B.J. Batterson drove in his third run in two games with an RBI-single to score Fishman.
Navy threatened in the sixth with runners and first and second and one out, but Magee retired five straight to end the game and collected his first win since March 19. He tied a season-high with six strikeouts and walked two.
Scheetz went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs in the nightcap, and pushed his hitting streak to nine.
Game one was more of an offensive affair, as each team ripped 10 hits apiece. Navy forged an early 2-0 lead on three straight hits in the top of the second off Bucknell starter Zach Allen. After a one-out single by Hager, Dominic Nicolini drilled a triple into right-center to put the Mids on top 1-0. David Woolsey made in 2-0 with an RBI-single.
Bucknell cut the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Scheetz knocked in Phil Bunting with a double down the left field line. Bunting led off the inning with a single to right-center.
Krentzman tied things up at 2-2 in the fourth with a lead-off home run. The junior left fielder launched a line drive over the left field fence for his second homer of the season.
Navy took advantage of two Bucknell errors and went back on top with a pair of runs off Allen in the fifth. Woolsey led off the frame with a double, and scored two batters later on an error by Pete Wolf at first. John Cocca reached on an error by Allen, and came home on Jake Miller's fielder's choice to right.
The Midshipmen were in position to put more runs on the board in the sixth when they placed runners on second and third with one out before Allen was replaced on the hill by Kevin Miller. However, Bucknell escaped unharmed when on his first pitch Miller, making just his second appearance of the season, induced Woolsey into an inning-ending fly-ball double play. Chris Cipolloni made a beautiful sliding catch in center for the second out, then nailed Neil Brubeck at third, who left the bag too early.
Bucknell scored two runs to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh, and had the winning run on second with one out. Navy reliever Zach Poelma served up a one-out double to Sam Moss, and hit Scheetz with a pitch before being replaced by Steven Goocey, who lasted just one batter after giving up a single to Fishman to load the bases. The Midshipmen changed pitchers again with Bryan Koehler, who gave up a two-run single to Batterson, putting runners on first and second. But Koehler retired Krentzman and pinch-hitter Brian Day, and the two teams went to extra innings for the second game in a row.
Navy pushed home a pair of runs off Miller in the top of the eighth to go ahead for good, 6-4. Jake Miller laced a triple into left-center to start off the frame, and scored one out later on a single by Hager. Nicolini ripped Navy's 10th hit, a double in the left field corner, to score Hager all the way from first.
Miller (0-2) pitched two innings for Bucknell and suffered the loss. He allowed two runs on three hits and a walk. Koehler (3-0) picked up the win after working one and two-third innings. He surrendered two hits and struck out two.
Hager went 3-for-3 with two runs for the game, while Nicolini and Woolsey each had a pair of hits. Fishman was 3-for-4 for Bucknell.
The Bison continue their season on Tuesday with a non-league game at Duquesne scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Bucknell returns to Patriot League action next weekend with a pair of home doubleheaders against Lehigh.
