PITTSBURGH - Bucknell traveled to Duquesne and dropped a pair of non-league games Tuesday afternoon, losing 13-2 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap. The Bison fell to 13-22 while Duquesne bumped its record to 16-11.
Blane Sharpless (0-2) made his second start of the year in game one and was handed the loss after three innings pitched. The senior southpaw gave up eight runs (five earned) on five hits. He also walked four and struck out five. Eric Steinbach hurled the last three innings and allowed five runs on six hits. The freshman right-hander walked none and struck out two.
Duquesne starter Ken Strader (3-2) worked six innings for Duquesne, scattered six hits, and held the Bison to a pair of runs in picking up the win. Matt O'Neill shut out Bucknell in the seventh.
After plating one run in both the first and second innings, the Dukes broke open game one with a six-run third on three hits and three errors to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Duquesne tacked on another run in the fourth, then put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth to go ahead 13-0.
Bucknell scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth when Larry Scheetz and Eric Fishman belted back-to-back solo home runs. Scheetz' homer was the first of his career, and Fishman's was his team-leading fourth of the season.
B.J. Batterson and Ben Stoll each had one double in game one.
In the nightcap, Bison starter Cory Nadler (0-2) pitched well in his first career start but came away with the loss. Nadler threw all six innings and allowed three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three. Over the final three innings he gave up only one hit, but it proved to be a costly one, as the Dukes' No. 5 hitter Jason Startari homered to break a 2-2 tie and put Duquesne ahead 3-2 going into the top of the seventh.
Eduardo Vivoni threw a three-hit complete game for Duquesne. Vivoni struck out seven and walked one, and did not allow a hit from the second through the fifth innings. He faced just four batters over the minimum.
Bucknell went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first when Scheetz homered for the second time in three at-bats. His home run also extended his hitting streak to 11.
Duquesne scored once in the first and once in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
The Bison drew even with one run in the top of sixth. Sam Moss led off with a single, and moved up two bases on consecutive groundouts by Scheetz and Fishman. Moss went on to score the tying run on a wild pitch.
Vivoni retired the Bison in order in the top of the seventh.
Bucknell returns to league play on April 13-14, when it hosts Lehigh in a pair of doubleheaders beginning at noon each day.
