LEWISBURG, Pa. - Zach Allen and Gregg Farmery combined on a six-hitter to lead Bucknell to a 5-3 win in the series opener, but Lehigh pounded out 18 hits en route to a 17-7 rout in the nightcap of a Patriot League doubleheader Saturday.
The split kept both teams at the .500 plateau in league play, Bucknell at 5-5 and Lehigh at 3-3. Bucknell is 14-23 overall, while Lehigh is now 17-13-1.
In the opener Bucknell's Ben Stoll went 3-for-3 and Pete Wolf and B.J. Batterson rapped two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit attack against Lehigh ace Dave Cerminaro. Cerminaro entered the game with a 5-2 record and a 2.63 earned-run average, but the Bison touched him for two runs in the opening inning and three more in the third.
Batterson's RBI single and Wolf's run-scoring double staked Allen to a 2-0 lead, and after Lehigh scored a single run in the second, Bucknell took a 5-1 lead thanks to a balk with the bases loaded and a two-run single by Stoll.
Allen (3-4) allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five in six-plus innings of work. Jeff Pietrak opened the Mountain Hawk seventh with a triple. Farmery was summoned from the bullpen and allowed the run to score on a ground out, but did not yield a hit and became Bucknell's all-time saves leader in the process. The save was Farmery's fifth of the season and 13th of his career.
Cerminaro went the distance for Lehigh, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits. He fanned six without a walk.
Game two was all Lehigh, as not even a one-hour rain delay could deter the Mountain Hawks offense. Four Lehigh players logged at three hits, led by Jesse Novalis' 3-for-3, 6-RBI showing. Jeremy Mack fell a single shy of the cycle and drove home four runs. Anthony Piccola was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and Justin Pagan added three singles, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Bison starter Kevin Burns (2-3) lasted only an inning and a third, allowing seven runs on seven hits. Lehigh led 11-4 when the game was halted with a steady rain falling in the middle of the Mountain Hawks six-run, third-inning rally. Southpaw Brian Andalman (3-3) was the beneficiary of the Lehigh offensive outburst. He earned the victory despite allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings.
Ben Krentzman led the Bison with two triples and four RBIs. Krentzman's three-baggers were part of an NCAA-record-tying seven triples between the two teams in the game. It is the sixth time seven triples have been hit in a game, the last occurring on March 25, 1992 in a game between Houston and McNeese State. Wolf and Stoll also added two hits for the Bison.
The two teams resume their four-game series Sunday at Bucknell's West Field.
