NEW YORK, N.Y. - Columbia opened the game with a 4-0 lead and it was too much to overcome as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season in a 13-7 decision at Columbia on Saturday.
Sophomore Amy Hasler (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) got the Bison on the board with a goal at the 20:34 mark of the first half, but the Lions had already built their 4-0 advantage. Columbia responded with three unanswered goals over a seven-minute span to go ahead 7-1 with 13:35 to go in the frame. Bucknell outscored the Lions 3-1 over the final 11:32 of the half, including two from sophomore Laura Nuss (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and one from junior Suzanne Raffaele (Springfield, Pa./Archmere Academy), but the early deficit put the Orange and Blue in an 8-4 halftime hole.
Columbia tallied just 42 seconds into the second half, but Hasler got Bucknell back within four just 1:03 later with an unassisted score to make it 9-5. The two teams exchanged scores several times over the next 24 minutes. The count stood at 12-7 in Columbia's favor before the Lions tallied with one second left in the contest to create the final score, 13-7.
Raffaele led the Orange and Blue with three scores, while Hasler and Nuss added two each. Senior Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had the squad's only assist, in addition to leading the team with five ground balls.
Bucknell falls to 2-1 on the season and has their six-game win streak, dating back to last season, snapped. The Bison continue their New York trip with a contest at Wagner on Sunday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m.
