STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Bucknell outscored Wagner, 6-5, in the second half of the women's lacrosse game on Sunday afternoon, but the Seahawks' 7-0 lead at halftime was too much to overcome as the Bison fell for the second-straight time.
Bucknell's offense struggled in the opening half, and the defense gave up seven unanswered scores to find themselves in a 7-0 hole at halftime. The Orange and Blue got on the board first in the second frame when junior Suzanne Raffaele (Springfield, Pa./Archmere Academy) connected with senior Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) at the 26:06 mark to make it 7-1. After two more from Wagner, the Bison scored two unanswered within 10 seconds of each other to get within six again, 9-3. Sophomore Laura Nuss (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) tallied with 22:51 on the clock and senior Erin Curtis (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) notched her first goal of the season at the 22:41 mark.
The closest BU would get on the day was 11-6, after three straight goals by the squad. Montefusco and Raffaele hooked up for the second time in the contest with 13:22 left in the game, before Nuss scored her second of the contest at 10:38, and senior Jen Gianis (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) followed with her only goal of the season off an assist from Montefusco just 21 seconds later. Wagner scored the final goal of the game with 9:01 remaining to make it 12-6.
Junior Nicole Kallis (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's), despite allowing 12 goals, stopped a season-best 18 shots.
Bucknell falls to 2-2 overall and will be back in action on Wednesday, March 13, for a 3:00 p.m. game at Fairfield.
