FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Suzanne Raffaele continued her fine junior campaign with a five-goal outburst to lead the Bucknell women's lacrosse team to an 11-6 win over Fairfield in a non-conference affair Wednesday afternoon.
The Bison snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-2 on the season. It was Fairfield's season opener.
After falling behind early in each of their last two contests, the Bison reversed the trend against the Stags, jumping out to a 5-1 lead following Amy Hasler's unassisted goal with 12:27 left in the half. Hasler's tally, her first of three on the day, came on the heels of back-to-back Raffaele markers less than two minutes apart.
Bucknell had to ward off a furious Fairfield rally, however, as runs of two and three goals helped the Stags close within 7-6 with 18:28 remaining in the game. But Hasler halted the surge when she completed her hat trick with 14:21 remaining. Two more goals from Raffaele and one from Laura Nuss made it four straight for the Bison to close the game.
Raffaele now has a team-leading 15 goals in five games.
Melissa Montefusco had a goal and two assists for the Bison, while Megan Cunningham led Fairfield with two goals.
Nicole Kallis, this week's Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, made 12 saves for Bucknell. Kathleen Crane made seven stops for Fairfield.
Bucknell opens Patriot League play this Saturday, hosting American.
