LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior first baseman Kelly Dugan went 4-for-7 on the day, but it was not enough as the Bucknell softball team drop both games of a doubleheader with Army on Sunday, March 31. The Bison fell 4-0 in the opener and 6-3 in the nightcap.
Army pitcher Shauna Evans, who had thrown her first career no-hitter the day before against the Bison, held off the Orange and Blue bats until the fourth inning of the opener this afternoon. Dugan finally got to Evans with a single to center field with one out in the bottom of the fourth. She got as far as second before the Black Knights got out of the inning.
The visitors wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, tallying once in the first and again in the second for a quick 2-0 lead. Bianca Brito opened the game with a double to dead center. After Lindsey March sacrificed Brito to second, Nicki Robbins delivered a single up the middle to score Brito.
Chrissy O'Hara scored Army's run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Brito. O'Hara reached by way of a walk and advanced to third after a sacrifice attempt resulted in a Bucknell error. Brito followed the errant play with her only RBI of the game to give the Black Knights the 2-0 cushion.
Army added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning, and Evans carried a one-hitter into the final frame. In the bottom of the seventh, Dugan struck again, singling through the left side for her second hit of the day. The Black Knights quickly calmed any Bison rally with a double play on the next batter, and Evans completed her two-hitter with a strikeout to end the game.
The second game of the twinbill saw Army take a 3-1 lead in just the second inning. The Black Knights scored three in the top of the second on four hits in the frame. Bucknell responded with its first run of the weekend in the bottom of the inning. Senior Jenna Demetriades led off with a single through the right side before sophomore Erin Doyle sacrificed her to second. Senior Barb Wood followed with a ground out to second base to advance Demetriades to third and freshman Jenny Ross delivered a double to left field to score Demetriades.
Army struck again in the top of the fourth with three more runs on three hits. The inning was highlighted by a two-run blast by Lauren Gobar to left field.
The Orange and Blue got within 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Dugan hit an RBI single that scored Ross, who had reached base as the leadoff on an Army error.
Bucknell's final run of the contest came in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Courtney Dohoney led off the inning with a single to right field. Junior Meredith Gill followed with another single, before senior Lauren Titus loaded the bases with a single to center field. The Black Knights brought in Evans to work out of the jam. Evans got Dugan to fly out before sophomore Angela Stackhouse grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Dohoney to score. Evans ended a stunning weekend performance by striking out the Bison batter for the save in the 6-3 Army victory.
Bucknell falls to 6-14 overall and 0-4 in the Patriot League. The Bison host Towson on Wednesday, April 3, for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
