LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team's offensive woes continued as the visiting Tigers of Towson handed BU a 6-1 setback in the opener and an 8-0 loss in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3. The Bison have now dropped seven in a row, while Towson extends it win-streak to five games.
Both teams went down in order in their half of the first inning in the first game, but the Towson squad capitalized on two hits and a walk in the second to plate the first two runs of the contest. With one out and one on, Sam Schaukowitch singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. After a passed ball allowed both runners to advance, Jeanne Bosch delivered a double to center field to score Schaukowitch and Chris Navarro. The Tigers extended their lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Navarro.
Bucknell got on the board in its half of the third. Senior Barb Wood led off the inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore Courtney Dohoney sacrificed Wood to second, and junior Meredith Gill followed with a ground out to second, advancing Wood to third. Senior Lauren Titus then singled up the middle to score Wood for Bucknell's only run of the game.
Towson added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to create the final score, 6-1. Beth Miller went the distance for the Tigers, allowing only three hits while striking out eight. Bucknell junior Brandi Porter took the loss for the Bison, pitching seven innings, giving up 10 hits and striking out four.
The Tigers wasted little time in the nightcap, striking for three runs in the top of the first. Katie Mumbauer led off the game with a single to right field. Michelle Cappe followed with a single, and after a Brooke Clyde walk loaded the bases, Navarro singled up the middle to score Mumbauer. Sara Foster walked to force in another Towson run, and Schaukowitch capped the scoring with a single to the pitcher to score Clyde.
The visitors scored three more in the top of the second, and pushed the lead to 8-0 with two runs in the third. Jenny Edwards and Mumbauer opened the third with back-to-back triples, and Clyde followed one batter later with an RBI double to cap the scoring.
Due to the eight-run mercy rule, the contest was ended in the fifth inning. Mumbauer was 3-for-4 in the contest with a triple, while Navarro went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Towson pitcher Beth Wilcox gave up just two hits through five innings of work.
Bucknell falls to 6-16 overall and will host Holy Cross for a crucial Patriot League weekend on Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7. Towson improves to 20-11 overall.
