WEST POINT, N.Y. - Five Bucknell players scored in double figures, led by junior Molly Creamer's (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) 19 points, as the Bison women's basketball team maintained a share of first place in the Patriot League with a 82-64 win at Army on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) and sophomore Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) combined for the team's first 12 points with eight and four, respectively, and the Bison clung to a 12-10 lead with 14:37 left in the half. The Orange and Blue mounted a 7-0 run from that point to take a 19-10 edge just two minutes later. A three-pointer by Army's Christine Gassman got the Black Knights within six, 19-13, but Bucknell embarked on a 15-6 spurt, fueled by six points from junior Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola), to take its largest lead of the half at 15, 34-19, with 3:28 remaining. The Bison got just one field goal the rest of the half, but entered the locker room with a 38-25 advantage.
Bucknell's 13-point halftime lead was due in large part to 51.9% (14-27) shooting from the floor, and an 81.8% (9-11) showing from the free throw line.
The Bison continued to build on their advantage in the second, leading by 20, 57-37, with 11:07 to play. The Black Knights slowly started to creep back in it, outscoring the Orange and Blue 12-1 over a four-minute span to get within nine, 58-49, with 7:21 to go. Army continued to cut into the Bucknell lead, mounting another lengthy run that ended with a Katie Macfarlane three-pointer at the 4:09 mark to get the Black Knights within six, 68-62.
Army still trailed by six, 70-64, with 2:56 to go but the Bison scored the final 12 points of the contest, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line, to come away with the 82-64 victory. Bucknell shot a sizzling 56.0% (14-25) from the field in the second half and ended the game with a 53.8% (28-52) clip from the floor.
Five Bucknell players scored in double-figures, led by Creamer's 19 points and 11 assists. Almind chipped in 18 and Quimby had 16. Senior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) and Franks added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Bucknell improves to 15-8 overall, marking the third-straight year the Bison have amassed 15 wins, and 8-2 in the Patriot League. The Orange and Blue return home to host conference newcomer, American, on Tuesday, February 12, in a 7:00 p.m. game. Army falls to 8-15 overall and 3-7 in league play.
