LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) continued her offensive onslaught, leading all players with 32 points as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated visiting Navy, 83-71, in come-from-behind fashion on Wednesday evening. Creamer shot an impressive 8-of-14 from the field and went 14-for-14 from the foul line.
The first half featured three lead changes and ten ties as neither team could get more than a five-point lead. The Mids missed seven of their first eight shots in the game, but the Bison led by just four, 6-2, four minutes into the contest. Bucknell led 8-5 with 15:39 to go before a Navy three-pointer by Maile Shimoda tied the contest at 8-8. The next 11 minutes of the frame saw the lead change twice and the two teams in a deadlock on seven different occasions, the final coming at 30-30 with 4:07 remaining. The visitors outscored the Orange and Blue, 11-6, the rest of the half to enter the locker rooms with a 41-36 lead.
Navy started the second half strong, quickly building its five-point halftime advantage to nine, 49-40, with 16:01 left in the contest. Bucknell would cut it to seven several times, but the Mids still led 53-46 four minutes later. Momentum seemed to shift at the 13:25 mark as sophomore Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) was awarded two free throws after an intentional foul by Navy's Courtney Davidson. Almind hit one of two to cut it to six, 53-47, and senior Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) took advantage of the free possession, scoring a layup to get within four. Four free throws by Creamer capped an 8-0 run by the Orange and Blue to tie the game, 53-53.
Navy pushed its lead back to four, leading 61-57 with 9:25 to go, but Bucknell embarked on a 20-0 run that spanned six minutes to take control of the game, 77-61, with 3:36 left on the clock. While the Mids missed nine straight shots during the stretch, the Bison went 4-for-8 from the floor and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. BU's lead would not fall below double-digits the rest of the way and the closest Navy would get was the final deficit of 12, 83-71.
The Orange and Blue, outrebounded 24-12 in the first half, ended the game with a 36-35 advantage on the glass.
Joining Creamer in double-figures scoring was senior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) with a season-high 18 points. Also in double-digits was sophomore Almind with 11 and LeBlanc with 10. Senior Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) had her second consecutive game with double-figures in rebounds, pulling down a game-high 12 boards to move into third place on the Bucknell all-time career rebounds list with 847.
Bucknell improves to 14-8 overall and 7-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison, who remain tied for the league lead with Holy Cross, travel to Army for a 1:00 p.m. game against the Black Knights on Saturday, February 9. Navy falls to 10-12 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
