LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lafayette's Jodi Spector scored two goals within a seven second period in overtime to propel the Leopards to a 9-8 victory over Bucknell in Patriot League women's lacrosse action on Saturday, April 7.
With the score knotted, 7-7, Spector found the back of the net with 1:24 left in the first overtime period. Bucknell earned the draw control, but Spector alertly caused a turnover and took advantage of a one-on-one situation with Bucknell goalkeeper Nicole Kallis (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) with 1:17 left on the clock to give the Leopards a 9-7 lead. The Bison got within one when senior tri-captain Ashley Evans (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) scored her third goal of the day with 58 ticks remaining on the game clock, but the Lafayette defense pulled through in the closing seconds to come away with the come-from-behind victory.
Bucknell dominated the first 30 minutes of play, staking themselves to a 5-3 halftime advantage. The Bison got on the board first behind a goal from A. Evans at the 23:02 mark. Sophomore Suzanne Raffaele (Springfield, Pa./Archmere Academy) put the Orange and Blue up 2-0 with a score with 17:56 left on the clock. The Leopards responded with two scores of their own to tie the score, but BU limited the visitors to just one more score in the frame, while scoring three of its own to take the two goal lead into the intermission.
The Herd extended its lead to three goals when senior Paige Brewster (Lambertville, N.J./Hopewell-Valley) scored her first goal of the season just over six minutes into the second half. Less than two minutes later, Lafayette closed within two, 6-4, before both teams went silent for 15 minutes. When the scoring finally started again, it was three unanswered scores by Lafayette's Heather McLelland (Springfield, Va./Kimball-Union Academy) that gave the Leopards their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 1:44 remaining in regulation. BU's Raffaele found A. Evans in front of the net with 46 seconds left to tie the score, and the game headed to overtime.
Bucknell, still looking for its first victory over Lafayette in the 23-game history of the series, falls to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League. The Leopards improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Bison are in action next on Saturday, April 14, when they host Patriot League rival Villanova at 1:00 p.m.
