LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored three goals and handed out four assists as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team picked up a crucial Patriot League victory over visiting Villanova, winning 13-5 on Saturday, April 14.
Bucknell got on the board first when senior Kari Evans (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) found the net at the 23:09 mark of the first half. Just under two minutes later, senior Paige Brewster (Lambertville, N.J./Hopewell-Valley) gave BU a two-goal cushion with an unassisted score with 20:48 left on the clock. Villanova cut the deficit to one when Cecily Pierce scored at the 19:50 mark, but a goal by Brewster 49 seconds later and Montefusco's first goal at the 15:02 mark gave the Bison a 4-1 advantage. With 14:23 to go in the opening half, the Wildcats' Sarah DePeters scored the first of her three goals on the day, bringing Villanova back within two, 4-2. Twenty seconds after senior Ashley Evans (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) scored BU's fifth goal of the game, DePeters answered with a Wildcat goal to keep it a two-goal game. It was Montefusco who had the final say, scoring her second goal of the half with 2:43 left on the game clock, giving Bucknell the 6-3 halftime lead.
Montefusco went right to work in the second stanza, scoring unassisted just 1:10 into the frame. The Bison, who opened the second half with five unanswered goals over a 15 minute span, led 11-3 before Villanova's Lauren Ferrara took a feed from Pierce to make it 11-4 with 14:43 left to play. DePeters scored her third goal of the game, and the Wildcats' last, with 10:31 on the clock, cutting it to 11-5 in BU's favor.
Bucknell freshman Laura Seiboth (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added two insurance goals in the final five and a half minutes to create the final deficit, 13-5. Seiboth and Kari Evans ended the day with two goals each, while Ashley Evans scored three times and added one assist.
With her four assists, Montefusco tied her career-high for a single season with 18 helpers. With 41 in her career, she is just one assist shy of tying the school record for career helpers (42).
Bison sophomore Nicole Kallis (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) had a stellar game in the cage, making 17 saves while allowing only five goals on 30 Villanova shots.
Bucknell improves to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in Patriot League play. The Orange and Blue close out the home portion of their season with a non-conference game against Columbia on Tuesday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. Villanova falls to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League.
