LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior tri-captain Ashley Evans (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) scored five goals and had one assist in the last home game of her career, and junior Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) set a school record for career assists, as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Columbia, 13-7, on Tuesday, April 17. It was the final home game of the season for the Bison.
Columbia got on the board first when Ellen Lowrey scored unassisted less than a minute into the game (29:10). A. Evans answered for the Orange and Blue just 29 seconds later to knot the score, 1-1. Freshman Amy Hasler (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) then rattled off two unanswered goals for BU, taking a feed from senior Jen Holiday (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) at the 28:20 mark and scoring unassisted with 24:03 left in the half to put Bucknell ahead, 3-1. After a free-position goal by Meredith Corkery at 21:45 brought the Lions within one, 3-2, the Bison again tallied, this time netting three goals over a seven minute span to go up, 6-2 with just over nine minutes left in the frame. The Lions scored their third goal of the contest with 8:54 left in the half and then both teams went silent until the last three minutes. A. Evans scored her third goal of the half with 2:41 to go, and Maggie Via found the back of the net for Columbia at the 2:11 mark to finish the scoring in the first half and give Bucknell the 7-4 halftime lead.
Both teams were silent for the first five minutes of the second stanza, but with 24:04 left in the game, Hasler found Holiday for what would prove to be the game-winning goal and give BU an 8-4 lead. Columbia's Arianna Faucetta cut the Bucknell lead to three, 8-5, taking a feed from Elizabeth Gilroy at the 18:31 mark. After over six minutes of scoreless lacrosse, the Bison scored four unanswered goals to take a commanding 12-5 lead. On the 10th goal of the game, Montefusco handed out her second assist on the day for the school record 43rd assist of her career. After Corkery's second goal with 4:41 left in the contest got Columbia as close as 12-6, the A. Evans tallied her fifth score of the game with just under three minutes left to give the Orange and Blue the seven-goal lead again. The Lions made a last second effort, scoring with eight seconds remaining, but time ran out for the visitors as Bucknell claimed the 13-7 victory.
Hasler and Holiday both finished the day with three goals and one assist, while Montefusco ended the game with one goal and two assists. Also scoring in their final home appearance was senior Kari Evans (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), tallying one goal and one assist, and senior Paige Brewster (Lambertville, N.J./Hopewell-Valley) with one assist.
Bucknell improves to 5-8 overall and will travel to Lehigh for a crucial Patriot League contest on Saturday, April 21. The Bison need a win over the Mountain Hawks to remain in contention for the final playoff spot in the Patriot League tournament. Columbia falls to 2-10 on the year.
