BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
A late surge by Lehigh was not enough for the Mountain Hawks as the Bison defeated the host, 11-7, in a Patriot League women's lacrosse contest on Saturday, April 21. Bison keeper Nicole Kallis (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) was kept busy all day as she frustrated the Lehigh attack by making 18 saves on the day. The Mountain Hawks managed to fire off 31 shots to Bucknell's 18 chances.
The Bison took a quick 3-0 lead before Lehigh's Rosie Sherry took a feed from Meredith Carso at the 18:15 mark to put Lehigh on the board. A free position goal eight minutes later by senior Jen Holiday (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) restored Bucknell's three-goal lead. The Mountain Hawks' Hillary Batcha made it 4-2 as she put home a pass from Ella Studdiford with seven minutes to go in the half. Bucknell senior Kari Evans (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) scored the first of her three goals at the 4:45 mark to give the Bison a 5-2 lead at the break.
Taking a 7-3 lead midway through the second half, two quick goals by Bucknell's Paige Brewster (Lambertville, N.J./Hopewell-Valley) and Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), seemingly took the wind out of Lehigh's sails. The Mountain Hawks, however, responded with two quick scores of their own 15 minutes later. Carine Allaf netted on a free position shot and Batcha added her second goal of the game as she swatted a loose ball past Kallis to make it 9-5. Bucknell would add two more goals to eventually seal up the game.
Bucknell improves to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play. The Bison will face Drexel in their final game of the season on Sunday, April 22, at 1:00 p.m. Lehigh ends its year at 1-12 overall, 0-5 in the league.
