LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior forward Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) scored 24 points in 24 minutes of action as the Bucknell women's basketball team cruised to an 85-66 Patriot League win over visiting Navy on Saturday, February 3. The Bison improve to 16-5 on the season, 6-1 in league play. Navy falls to 8-13 overall and 3-4 in Patriot League play.
Navy took a 2-0 lead, scoring on their first possession, but that was the only lead the Midshipmen would see in the game. The Orange and Blue tied the game at 2-2 with 18:23 left in the first, and the Bison never looked back. A 6-0 run pushed the Bucknell lead to six, 8-2, early in the half and two quick baskets from Navy cut it to one (8-7), but that was as close as the guests would get the rest of the way. Bucknell used 52.9% (18-34) shooting in the first half on its way to a 46-24 halftime lead. Quimby scored 16 of her game-high 24 in the opening frame.
The Midshipmen outscored the Bison in the second half, 42-39 thanks to eight three-pointers in the frame, but the 22-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome. The closest Navy could get in the stanza was the final deficit of 19.
The Bucknell defense was solid on Navy's leading scorer, holding Courtney Davidson to just four points in the contest. Navy answered by holding the league's leading scorer, Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), to under 10 points for only the seventh time in her career. Creamer finished the contest with eight points and nine assists.
Joining Quimby in double figures scoring for the Orange and Blue were junior Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) with 12 points each. Franks also matched her career-high with seven rebounds. Freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) led all players with a career-best 12 caroms, in addition to her nine points.
The Bison, whose win total is the most by a Bucknell squad in five years, host Patriot League rival Lafayette on Wednesday, February 7, for a 5:15 p.m. game.
