West Point, N.Y. - Freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) scores a career-high 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting to lead all scorers as the Bucknell women's basketball team picks up its 18th victory of the season at Army, 92-77. The victory brings the Bison record to 18-6 overall and 8-2 in the Patriot League. The win ties the school record for wins in a season, the other two seasons that 18 victories were achieved was the 1987-88 and the 1995-96 campaign.
The Bison found themselves down to the Black Knights by as many as 11 points in the first half. The Black Knights built their advantage on the strength of 62.5% (5-8) shooting from behind the three-point arc. Army held a lead from the 18:19 mark in the first half all the way until 20 seconds remained in the period when Almind buried her second bucket in the final minute. Both teams had solid shooting percentages in the first half, the Bison holding a slight advantage in field goal percentage, 55.9% (19-34) to Army's 55.2% (16-29)
Bucknell came out of the locker room in the second half like a team on a mission, going on a 16-4 run in the first 5:36 of the half. Sparking the run for the Bison was sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) who made a traditional three-point play and then found several of her teammates open for easy jump shots. The Black Knights made several attempts at cutting down the Bison advantage, but the Bucknell lead would build to as much as 23 before the final buzzer sounded with 92-77 showing on the scoreboard in favor of Bucknell.
The Herd improve to 14-0 when leading at halftime and for the sixth time this season had atleast six players score in double figures. Responding well to a sprained ankle suffered on Monday during practice, junior Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) tallied 22 points and pulled down 11 boards in the contest. Also scoring in double figures for Bucknell was Creamer with 18 and six assists, junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) with 13 and sophomore Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) had 10 points.
Bucknell utilized outstanding shot selection to earn its 18th victory of the season shooting 59.3% (32-54) for the contest and 65.0% (13-20) in the second period. Army couldn't keep up with the Bison as they only shot 45.2% (28-62) from the field in the game. A big difference in the contest came at the charity stripe, as Bucknell was 25-of-30 from the free throw line and the Black Knights only reached the line 15 times, making 11 of them.
The women's basketball team will be in action on Saturday, February 17, as it returns to the friendly confines of Davis Gymnasium for a 1:00 p.m. contest versus visiting Colgate University. The Bison will be looking to break the all-time record for wins in a season as the welcome the Red Raiders to their home court.
