WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross' Monika Rothemich led all scorers with 19 points, including 12 in the first half of play, as the Crusaders held off a tireless Bucknell women's basketball squad to come away with a 66-63 victory at the Hart Center on Saturday, February 10. The win keeps Holy Cross' 52 game win streak at home over Patriot League opponents in tact.
Bucknell held a 26-25 lead with 5:11 left in the first half before a 12-0 Holy Cross run put the Crusaders ahead 37-26 with over two minutes to play in the frame. The two teams exchanged buckets over the final two minutes and the host team entered the locker room with a 41-30 halftime advantage.
The Bison quickly erased the 11-point halftime deficit, opening the second stanza on a 10-1 run to cut the Holy Cross lead to two, 42-40. Freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) scored four of her team-high 14 points during the stretch. The Crusaders pushed their cushion back to seven, 49-42, with 13:19 left in the game, but Bucknell mounted an 8-0 run, going up 50-49 with just under ten minutes to play, taking its first lead of the game since the 5:11 mark of the first half. Junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) had four of her 10 points during the run.
Bucknell trailed 65-63 with 1:32 to play and had several opportunities to tie the game. With the Crusaders still leading by two, the Bison were forced to foul in the final seconds. Despite 1-of-4 shooting from the foul line in the last 10 seconds, the Crusaders still managed to come up with the ball and the Orange and Blue could not get a final shot off.
Joining Almind and Rounsley in double figures was junior Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for her eighth double double of the season and 26th of her career. Sophomore Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) scored 13 points for BU while also handing out four assists.
Bucknell, losing for the first time in six games, falls to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison fall to 0-12 in the Hart Center. Holy Cross improves to 17-7 on the year and 9-0 in Patriot League play.
