BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the third time this season, the Bucknell women's basketball team placed all five starters in double figures scoring, led by 26 from sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), as the Bison defeated Lehigh on the road, 89-79, in Patriot League action on Saturday, January 27.
Bucknell opened the game on a 4-0 run and quickly built a nine point advantage (16-7) just five minutes into the contest. Creamer and junior Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) combined to score all 16 of BU's points to open the game. After an 11-3 Lehigh run closed the gap to one, 19-18, the game went back and forth for the next minute before the Orange and Blue mounted a 10-4 run to again lead by seven with 7:06 to play. The Mountain Hawks came charging back, however, and eventually the teams entered the locker rooms in a 41-41 tie.
Bucknell never trailed in the second half, opening the frame on a 6-0 run to go up 49-43 at the 16:51 mark. Five and a half minute later, Lehigh's Anne Tierney capped a 10-4 run with a jumper to tie the game 53-53. It was all Bucknell from there as the Bison used a 22-6 spurt spanning six minutes to gain the largest lead of the ball game at 16, 75-59. The Orange and Blue missed only one shot, while making nine in the run. Lehigh would cut it to nine, 86-77, behind stellar free throw shooting with just over a minute to play, but BU's 65.5% (19-29) in the half was too much to overcome.
In addition to her 26 points, Creamer recorded the second double double of her career with a career-high 12 assists. Freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) finished with 22 points and a career-best five assists. Quimby ended the game with 14 while sophomore Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) had 12. Junior captain Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) recorded her second straight double double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Bucknell improves to 14-5 overall, the best start in school history. The Bison finish the first round of Patriot League play with a 5-1 record. Bucknell steps out of conference play to host Stony Brook on Wednesday, January 31, for a 7:30 p.m. game.
