Volleyball Outlasts Lafayette in Five-Set Affair

EASTON, Pa.- Bucknell (5-5, 1-0 Patriot League) opened its conference campaign off on the right foot with a five-set (25-23, 25-27, 15-25, 25-20, 15-8) victory over Lafayette (6-5, 0-1 Patriot League) on Friday night. The Bison fell behind two sets to one before rallying for a win and extending its win streak over the Leopards.

Rookie Marion Haskell led Bucknell with 15 kills. She was one of three Bison to record double-digit kills. Cameron Lloyd added 13 kills and Kaitlyn Taylor supplied 12. Emerson Boyd served up 24 assists.

Lloyd shoveled 22 digs to surpass 1000 career digs. The senior entered the contest with 995 digs.

Neither team was particularly efficient offensively. Bucknell hit .104 to Lafayette's .057.

Lafayette, in hindsight, would rue the first set and how it allowed a massive lead slip away into a 25-23 Bucknell win. The Leopards jumped out to the early advantage and led by ten points multiple times. Bucknell never gave up and kept chipping away at the lead, tying it up at 22-22. The teams traded points before Bucknell closed out the set on back-to-back Lafayette errors.

The second set was an even affair at 13-13 before Lafayette uncorked a 5-0 run. Once again, the Bison launched a comeback and tied the set at 24-24. Lafayette prevented another Bison comeback with a 3-1 run.

Lafayette dominated the third set, winning 25-15. The Leopards broke away after an early tie and Bucknell was unable to generate another rally.

Bucknell trailed 14-12 in the fourth set before using a 4-0 run to grab the lead. Lafayette tried to counterattack but Haskell posted three kills to prevent the Leopards from winning in four sets.

The fifth set was all Bucknell. The Bison stormed to a 12-4 lead and, despite three straight Lafayette points, closed out the 15-8 set win and the match victory.

Bucknell remains on the road tomorrow to face Lehigh.
