Bison Explode for 16 Runs on 17 Hits in Game One Win Over Navy in Patriot League Semifinal

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team exploded for a season-high 16 runs and 17 hits to take game one of a Patriot League semifinal from Navy 16-4 at Depew Field at Marren Park on Sunday. Ten different Bison had a hit and eight different Bison had an RBI in the ballgame as the Bison took the early advantage in the series.Â
Jake Schultz gave the Bison a second straight quality start as the junior went six innings on the mound with just three runs on eight hits. Tyler Hawkins allowed one run over the final three innings as the sophomore earned his first career save.
Zach Selfon led the Bison with four RBIs on the day as the third baseman was 2-for-4 at the plate. Ty Lagoni and Michael Chiaravallo each had three RBIs on the day. Michael Trommer and Deacon Bowne had three hits apiece, and Billy Fluharty and Lleyton Coupe each had two.
Bucknell's 17 runs are the most runs the Bison have scored in a Patriot League playoff game since the Bison scored 20 against Navy back in the 2003 Patriot League tournament.
After two quick innings by Schultz, the Bison opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the second. John Calabrese singled to start the inning, and Lleyton Coupe gave the Bison two runners in scoring position with a double to the right-center field gap. Selfon then came up to drive in his first run of the game with a fly ball to right field.
The Bison followed with a three-run third to make it a 4-0 game. Fluharty led off the inning with a walk and Trommer doubled down the first base line in the next at-bat. Fluharty scored on a wild pitch before a walk by Ty Lagoni put runners on the corners. Calabrese hit another sacrifice fly and Coupe singled to set up a two-run base hit by Selfon.
Bucknell broke it open with a six-run fourth inning. Bowne and Fluharty singled, and Lagoni walked to load the bases with one out. Mathias drove in a run with a walk, and Michael Chiaravallo wore a pitch to bring in another. Coupe drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Selfon followed with another two-run single. Bowne came back up later in the inning for an RBI single to extend the led to 10-0.
Jake Hooten homered for the Midshipmen to cut the Bison lead to 10-2, but Chiaravallo got a run right back in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-out double to make it 11-2.
The Mids scored another in the sixth, but the Bison answered with five more runs to make it 16-3. The Bison opened the inning with five straight hits as Swenson and Bowne began the onslaught with singles to begin the frame. Fluharty drove in another run on a single, and Trommer singled in the next at-bat to load the bases. Lagoni then roped a triple down the right field line to drive in all three runs. He then came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Chiaravallo.
Navy put some pressure on Hawkins in the seventh as the Mids loaded the bases and pushed a run across the board. Hawkins earned a big strikeout before a fly out ended the inning. Hawkins then closed out the game with two scoreless innings as he surrendered just a walk.
Bucknell and Navy continue the Patriot League semifinal series with game two on Monday at 1:05 p.m. at Depew Field at Marren Park.
