ROCK HILL, S.C.- Bucknell (1-15) dropped two games to Georgia State (15-9) and East Tennessee State (10-4) on Saturday at the Winthrop Invitational. The Bison fell 3-2 (8) in GSU and 11-1 (5) to ETSU. Inclement weather delayed the games by four hours.
Georgia State Recap
Bucknell dropped its fifth one-run loss of the season in a 3-2 (8) extra innings defeat to Georgia State. The Panthers scored two runs in the eighth inning while Bucknell could only muster one in response.
Avery Powers went the distance for the Bison and deployed excellent control, not walking a single batter.
GSU opened the scoring in the first inning. Maya Bagsby singled up the middle and Maia Mumpfield followed up another single that the speedy Bagsby scored on.
Bucknell left nine runners on base but the Bison finally broke through for the tying run in their fourth at-bats. Shea Malone doubled down the line and advanced to third on Nicole Lioumis' sacrifice bunt. Malone scored on a wild pitch to tie the contest.
The Bison dodged two prime GSU scoring attempts in the sixth and seventh innings. Georgia State loaded the bases in the former with two outs on three straight singles. Powers induced an inning-ending pop-up. In the latter, Bucknell used a relay to cut down a Panther at home plate and obtained the third out on a caught stealing try.
The Orange & Blue had a chance to walk-off GSU. Sarah Zimmerman singled and Barbara Jo Coppola sacrificed her to second. Natalie Monroe, pinch hitting for Haley Speicher, and Skye Perez popped up to leave Zimmerman behind.
The international tiebreaker came into play but Bagsby flew out to start the frame. McKenzie Walker, placed on second, stole third. Mumpfield singled another single to score Walker. Chloe Hatcher followed up with a double to plate Mumpfield.
Bucknell started strong in their chance. Perez was placed on second and Brooke Popella doubled home the Texan infielder. Georgia State promptly inserted Makayla Stephens in the circle. The change proved excellent. Meadow Gambacurta, Marissa Rapino, and Malone all struck out swinging and GSU escaped with the 3-2 victory.
ETSU Recap
The Buccaneers rolled to a run-rule victory of 11-1 over the Bison.
Sarah Zimmerman started in the circle for Bucknell. ETSU scored a run in the first inning. Abigail Taylor reached on a Lioumis' error, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Whitney Boone singled up the middle, scoring Taylor.
The roof fell apart in the second inning when ETSU tallied ten runs. A Popella error scored the carousel of Buccaneers. A Payton Moore single and stolen base placed runners at second and third. Riley Martens' single scored both Bucs. A walk and another single loaded the bases. Riley Croley singled home two more Buccaneers. Taylor Suchy doubled home another run and Payton Hale replaced Zimmerman. Hale promptly walked two straight batters and allowed a wild pitch to score another run. Bucknell finally obtained an out when Leinani Lutu flew into a double play. Moore singled home two runs. Martens walked and Tiare Rieger doubled home the final two runs. When the dust cleared, ETSU led 11-0.
Bucknell scored a single run in the fifth inning. Tori Kirkpatrick walked, Angelina Seropian was hit by a pitch, and Lioumis walked to load the bases. Rosanna Merturi pinch hit and popped up. Monroe delivered an RBI single. Reagan Powell struck out and Popella popped up to end the game.
