LEWISBURG, Pa.- Barbara Jo Coppola's rookie season has been one of the brightest debuts by a Bucknell newcomer in recent years and she picked up another accolade today, being named D1 Softball Mid-Major Freshman of the Week for her performances against Cornell and Saint Francis.Â
"Barbara Jo had an outstanding week at the plate," said head coach Angie Stackhouse. "For a freshman, the way she's stepping in with confidence and producing consistently is impressive. She's quickly becoming an offensive powerhouse for us - someone we can rely on in big moments - and it's exciting to see her growth continue every game."
Coppola dominated the Big Red and Red Flash pitching, batting a sizzling .615 on eight hits, three of which were extra base hits (a double, a triple, and a home run), a .667 on-base percentage, a 1.077 slugging percentage, and nine RBIs.Â
She started the week at Cornell, hitting .500 with two hits, including her first collegiate home run - a monster two-run shot over the center field wall.Â
The rookie saved her most potent bat for Saint Francis. She batted .667 (6-for-9) with a double and a triple and seven RBIs. Her bat led the way with a three-run triple in Bucknell's 25-2 game one win over SFU. The team set a program record in RBIs (23), shattering a 45-year-old record set versus Mansfield in 1981.Â
Coppola already previously won a Patriot League Rookie of the Week, ranks first on the team in batting average (.355), and sits second in doubles (8), OBP (.438), RBIs (18), and walks (11).Â
Bucknell faces reigning powerhouse Boston on Easter weekend.Â
