LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell won the opening Patriot League series against Holy Cross and rookie pitcher Avery Powers played a key role in the Bison's two wins over the Crusaders. League voters took notice and awarded the freshman her first career Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Powers pitched eight innings and recorded a win in Game One.Â
"Avery earning Pitcher of the Week is a reflection of the work she's been putting in every day," said head coach Angela Stackhouse. "She's attacking hitters with confidence, commanding the zone, and trusting her stuff in big moments. What's been most impressive is her composure - she's competing with a calm edge and setting the tone for us every time she steps in the circle."
Bucknell players have now won all three weekly honors (Player, Pitcher, and Rookie) in a season for the first time since 2019. Sarah Zimmerman won Player on Feb. 23 and Barbara Jo Coppola received Rookie on March 9.Â
Powers started the first game of the weekend and threw five strong innings, only allowing a single run when a Crusader went yard. She struck down eight Holy Cross batters and only yielded two walks.Â
She received the assignment for the rubber match and provided three innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts. The score was tied 1-1 when she departed and Bucknell ultimately prevailed 8-7 for the series victory.Â
Powers leads the Bison in innings (71.1), strikeouts (57), and wins (3). Her 57 punchouts are second in the Patriot League.Â
Bucknell plays two non-conference doubleheaders this week. The Bison head to Cornell tomorrow and welcome Saint Francis on March 26.Â
