LEWISBURG, Pa. – Owen Kovacs and Colin McLoy, two of the catalysts of Bucknell's 14-12 home win over Colgate, earned Patriot League weekly honors on Monday. Kovacs, a senior attackman, earned PL Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time, while the junior McLoy garnered his second PL Faceoff Specialist of the Week citation in the last three weeks.
Kovacs entered Saturday's game with three career three-goal games, and he blew past that personal best with a five-goal outburst against the Raiders. He scored three of the team's first six goals as the Bison raced out to a 6-2 lead. Colgate made a run in the second half and went up by a goal, but Kovacs scored two big fourth-quarter tallies to help Bucknell regain control of the game. He could have had a sixth goal but wisely passed up a point-blank empty-netter in the final minute so that the Bison could run out the rest of the clock.
Kovacs now has 15 goals on the season, second-most on the squad behind Michael Meyer's 25. The lefty sniper is shooting a blistering 45.5 percent on the season, a figure that ranks 24th nationally.
McLoy had another strong day at the faceoff X, winning 17 of his 26 draws against Colgate, including a number of big ones in the fourth quarter to help the Bison surge back in front. McLoy tallied a game-high six ground balls, and he upped his season percentage to .588, third-best in the Patriot League and 17th-best in Division I lacrosse.
Bucknell improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League after Saturday's win. The Bison are tied for second place with Holy Cross, one game behind 3-0 Boston University. Bucknell next travels to Loyola (4-3, 1-1 PL) on Saturday, with the opening faceoff set for 3:30 p.m.
