SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell defeated two nationally ranked doubles teams to take the early lead over Delaware, but the Blue Hens came back to win four singles matches and defeat the Bison 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Central PA Tennis Center. Aristotelis Bezianis won a three-setter at No. 4 singles to clinch it for Delaware, which is off to a 2-0 start in 2026.
The Bison (2-2) got out to a great start with impressive wins in the top two doubles spots. At No. 1, Amar Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald downed 35th-ranked Euan Mackenzie and Tobey Lock 6-3. Mackenzie and Lock became the first Blue Hens doubles team to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the fall. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega and Adam Stavrakas defeated No. 62 Itamar Tapiro and Federico Garbero 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Tahirovic and Will Robinson won singles matches for Bucknell. Tahirovic rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Garbero in the top flight, while Robinson came from a set down to beat Mackenzie 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
Robinson's win leveled the match at 3-3, leaving the last remaining action on Court 4. Liam Kilmer won the first set from Bezianis and led 5-4 in the second, but the senior who played his first two seasons at Lehigh won the final three games of the second set and the first two in the third. Kilmer got the service break back to pull even at 2-all, but Bezianis claimed the final four games to clinch it for the Blue Hens.
Delaware took a 29-28-1 lead in an all-time series that dates back to 1933.
With his two doubles wins this weekend against Binghamton and Delaware, McDonald now has 85 in his career and is two shy of the Bucknell record, currently held by Ryan Sandberg.
He will have a chance to tie the mark next weekend when the Bison host Mercyhurst and Temple at the Central PA Tennis Center.
