RESULTS
APALACHIN, N.Y. – Before the start of the fall season, Bucknell head coach Mike Binney noted that a significant team goal was to get back in the winner's circle after a five-year tournament drought. His squad needed only three events to check that box, as the Bison came from seven shots back at the start of the day to post a four-shot victory at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Binghamton at the Links at Hiawatha Landing.
Scores were up all over the field in cool, breezy conditions, but the Bison followed up their even-par 288 in Sunday's opening round with a 298 to finish at 586 for the 36-hole tournament. That was enough to outlast La Salle, which opened with a 7-under 281 but slipped to a 309 in round two to finish at 590.
While freshmen Charlie Barrickman and Brad McDermott and senior Taylor Kuehn all finished in the top 10 individually, sophomore Jaxon Brown helped Bucknell clinch the championship with a clutch birdie at the par-5 18th hole. At the time, the Bison were clinging to a two-shot lead over La Salle, and while Brown birdied the last, the Explorer in his group made a 10. The six-shot swing gave the Bison a sudden eight-stroke cushion, which they ended up needing as La Salle's Logan Paczewski and Gavin Docsch went birdie-eagle in the last two groups.
Bucknell's tournament win was its first since the Howard Bison Invitational in the fall of 2021. Barrickman, who won Colgate's Alex Lagowitz Memorial in his first collegiate start last month, was hoping to make it a double when he shot 68 on Sunday and then moved into the lead with a birdie at the par-5 ninth hole on Monday. But Barrickman gave a couple of shots back on the inward nine, and Dosch, who was coming off a first-round 67, broke a tie with Iona's Jennings Oelke with the dramatic finishing eagle.
Barrickman finished at 2-under 142, good for sole possession of third place. McDermott shot 70-75 to finish fifth, his best collegiate finish. Kuehn shot 73-74 and tied for ninth, while Brown placed T-25th with rounds of 77-75.
After Bucknell an La Salle, St. Bonaventure (592), Iona (595), and Le Moyne (601) rounded out the top five. Iona was the only team in the field of 13 to improve on its first-round score.
The Bison will now look to carry the momentum from the win at Binghamton into its own home even. The three-day, 54-hole Bucknell Invitational runs from Sunday though Tuesday at the Bucknell Golf Club.
