SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. – Bucknell's top two eights were victorious on Saturday morning in a season-opening, four-team showcase on the Susquehanna River. Delaware, Drexel, and Patriot League rival Lehigh joined the Bison for a 5,800-meter race where 14 eights went off together.

Bucknell's Varsity Eight, coxed by Smith Bumpers and stroked by Evelyn Sherman, was first across the line in 20:01.60, nearly five seconds ahead of Delaware and Drexel, who had a photo finish for second. Lehigh was fourth in 20:34.82.

The Bison Second Varsity Eight, coxed by Paige Murphy and stroked by Callie VonderHaar, was the first of the "B" boats to finish, and they did so with plenty of open water to spare. Bucknell's time of 20:40.48 was 21 seconds faster than Drexel.

Drexel's 3V8+ took first among the "C" boats in 21:12.18, followed by Delaware, Bucknell, and Lehigh.

Bucknell had the only Varsity Four entry, and the Bison finished in 24:22.86.

This was the first of four fall events for the Bison. Next up is the famed Head of the Charles regatta in Boston on Oct. 17.
