LEWISBURG, Pa. – Charlie Barrickman had to wait an extra day to make his home debut after Sunday's scheduled opening round of the Bucknell Invitational was rained out, but it was worth the wait as the freshman carded a bogey-free 66 on Monday. The Bison posted a 2-under-par 278 as a team and are tied for fifth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
Barrickman birdied holes 4, 7, 15, and 18 on the way to his fifth under-par round out of nine this fall. The two-time Patriot League Golfer of the Week is tied for third place on the individual leaderboard, three shots behind FDU's Angad Singh, who broke the tournament record and tied the course record with a 7-under 63. La Salle's Logan Paczewski followed with a 65, followed by Barrickman, Alex Hill of Colgate, and Aidan Talent of Manhattan at 66.
Thirty-eight players shot even-par or better on a Bucknell Golf Club track that was softened by a full day of rain on Sunday. The average score in the 18-team, 108-player field was 72.13, and nine teams sit at even or better after 18 holes.
FDU and Colgate surged to the lead at 10-under 270, followed by defending champion Youngstown State (275), La Salle (277), St. Bonaventure (278), Bucknell (278), Monmouth (279), Manhattan (279), and Binghamton (280).
Bucknell's five starters combined for 17 birdies on the day. Taylor Kuehn was second low man behind Barrickman with a 70. Kuehn made the turn at 3-under after birdies at 4, 8, and 9 but slipped back to even par with three bogeys on the back side.
Freshman Conner Freedman and sophomore Henry Bolster were also counters with matching 71s, and freshman Brad McDermott's 73 was not needed. Freedman enjoyed his best collegiate round to date, and he was one hole away from posting a red number. After making four birdies in a five-hole span at 6, 8, 9, and 10, he was 2-under through 16 before an unluck triple bogey at 17 dropped him back to +1.
Bolster had three birdies and 12 pars on his card. McDermott also made three birdies and was 1-under through 15 before a tough finish left him at +3.
Bucknell also had three individuals in action. Jaxon Brown and Jack Hartman both shot 71, and Hunter Duncan, in his first appearance of the season after dealing with an injury, carded a 79.
Barrickman's 66 is tied for the fourth-lowest round in team history and the second-lowest by a freshman. The 278 team score is third-best in program annals, two shy of the school record.
The second and final round gets started at 9 a.m. off split tees on Tuesday morning. Bucknell's main group will have tee times ranging from 9:45-10:21 off No. 1. The Bison will be paired with St. Bonaventure and Monmouth.
