LEWISBURG, Pa.- American (13-4, 8-0 Patriot League) flew into Davis Gym on an eight-game winning streak and seeking its 1000th program win. The Eagles left with the historic win and a nine-game winning streak after sweeping Bucknell (7-9, 3-4 Patriot League) in straight sets (14-25, 23-25, 18-25).Â
American diverted Bucknell's potent offense, holding the Bison to a .121 hitting percentage and only allowing a single player (Sidney Shaffer) to reach double-digits in kills. The Eagles also shut down Bucknell's serving game. The Bison did not record a single ace while allowing nine.Â
Shaffer led the Bison with 11 kills on a sizzling .455 hitting percentage, as the senior posted another double-digit performance.
The Eagles grabbed the early advantage in the first set and controlled the flow. American kept stacking points, eventually built a safe double-digit lead, and coasted to the 25-14 set one win.Â
American grew a 12-7 lead in the second set before the Bison rallied and tied the score at 13-13. The Eagles responded with a 3-0 run and again Bucknell answered by tying the set at 21-21. American scored twice and two straight Orange & Blue blocks again knotted the contest. The Bison's magic ran out as American tallied twice for the set win.Â
Bucknell took the 12-10 lead in set three before a 6-0 American run permanently restored control to the Eagles. The Bison cut the deficit to 18-16 but never inched closer and the Eagles closed out the sweep and 1000th victory.Â
The Bison conclude the home stretch tomorrow at 2 p.m. versus Holy Cross.Â
