Box Score

LEWISBURG, Pa.- Conditions were rainy outside but denizens in Davis Gym did not find much sunshine as Holy Cross (10-11, 3-5 Patriot League) defeated Bucknell (7-10, 3-5 Patriot League) in four sets (22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 20-25) on Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders won the first two sets, the Bison rallied to force a fourth stanza, but Holy Cross finished off the Orange & Blue for its third straight win.

Bucknell had three players in double-digit kills but the stat belies the Bison's offensive struggles. The Orange & Blue only hit .148 and committed 12 service errors. Cameron Lloyd led Bucknell in kills (14) and digs (17). Klea Tarja received ample playing time and recorded 12 kills. Sidney Shaffer came on strong in the final two sets to finish with ten kills.

Kat Teepe paced Holy Cross with 16 kills.

Both teams finished with 68 digs.

Bucknell briefly led 1-0 in the first set before the Crusaders seized control. Holy Cross built a 19-10 lead and seemed ready to coast to the easy set win. However, the Bison had different plans and made a late run before falling 25-22.

The second set featured plenty of action with ten ties and four lead changes, as neither team could create separation. Holy Cross made a 3-0 run with the score at 18-18 and extended its stretch to 7-2 for the set victory.

The Crusaders looked poised for the sweep, bolting to a 16-10 lead in the third set. Bucknell rallied for an 8-1 run before Holy Cross called a timeout. The strategy did little to halt the Bison's march to avoid a sweep. Bucknell kept stacking points and won the set on a Tarja kill.

The fourth stanza featured some back-and-forth runs. Holy Cross jumped to a 7-3 lead and Bucknell replied with a 6-0 run. The Crusaders ripped off a 6-0 stretch of their own. The Bison tied the set at 13-13 and then went ahead 17-13. Another 6-0 run by Holy Cross permanently handed the advantage to the Purple & White. Bucknell tried to rally once more but the Crusaders struck home for the set and match victories.

Bucknell and Holy Cross renew hostilities next Saturday in Worcester, as the second half of Patriot League action begins.
