Bison Earn First Conference Road Win of the Season at Boston U. 62-51

BOSTON, Mass. — Bucknell women's basketball (7-14, 3-7) earned its first conference road win of the season over Boston University (7-14, 3-7) 62-51 on Saturday afternoon. The Bison out-scored the Terriers in every quarter of the game and took care of the ball, while forcing Boston to make costly turnovers which proved to be a difference maker in the contest.
Bucknell's defensive pressure forced Boston to commit 18 turnovers in comparison to the Bison's four. The last time Bucknell gave up fewer than 10 turnovers in a game was in Patriot League conference play against American last season. In tandem with the turnovers, the Bison recorded 12 steals in this afternoon's game to the Terriers two and had 19 points off turnovers to their five.
Tuana Coskun led the Bison in scoring with 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 shooting from three. Desirae Ashton broke her career-high in points with 14 on a 6-of-9 shooting performance. Anna Kunzwiler led the team in rebounds with five and Ella Kreuzer led in assists with four. Ashton led the team in steaks with thee and Reese Zemitis had two blocks on the afternoon. Ella Kreuzer matched her career-high in made three's with three in the game.
Bucknell saw one of its best shooting days of the season as it shot 47.3 percent from the field to Boston's 44.2 percent. The Bison also shot well from three with 36 percent compared to the Terriers 23.8 percent. The one area Boston out-shot Bucknell was at the free-throw line where the Terriers went 5-for-9 and the Bison went 1-for-3.
The Bison saw 23 points off the bench and led the game for over 37 minutes of competition.
The Terriers won the tipoff and found a quick layup from Anastasiia Semenova. Reese Zemitis immediately answered with a three-pointer to open Bucknell's scoring. After a defensive board, Coskun knocked down a layup and was fouled on the play, earning an and-one opportunity. Coskun drained the free-throw to give Bucknell an early 6-2 lead. Semenova then found the basket on another layup, but Coskun answered yet again, with one of her own. The Terriers then went on a 5-0 run to take a 9-8 lead, but it wouldn't last long as Isabella Casey hit a jumpshot shortly after to give Bucknell a 10-9 lead at the media timeout. Out of the break, Coskun drained her first three-pointer of the game. Audrey Ericksen then notched a Terrier layup. After two minutes of intense defensive play from both sides creating a scoreless couple of minutes, the Terriers found themselves on a 7-0 run. The Bison answered with an eight-point run to regain the lead as Coskun nailed a three to tie it, Casey hit a shot off of a shifty back-door cut and Ashton banked in a three to end the first quarter with the Bison up 21-16.
The first two minutes of the second quarter was all Bucknell as Ashton went on a 7-0 run for the Bison. She opened the second quarter in the same way she closed out the first, with a Bison three. Mariah Hardy then came up with a tough defensive board on the next play to set up Ashton for a jumper to extend Bucknell's lead to 10. Ella Kreuzer then made a play to get the Bison the ball back, which resulted in an Ashton layup to force Boston to call a timeout with 8:05 left in the half. Out of the break, Ines Monteagudo hit back-to-back three-pointers to close the gap to just six before Coach Woodruff called a timeout. Off the Bison timeout, the Terriers continued their scoring run by adding another three, before Ashton came up with a big steal and breakaway layup to make it 30-25 in favor of Bucknell with 4:33 left in the half. After a minute of scoreless play, Casey came up with a steal on a bad pass from Boston that led to a layup by the guard. Adler broke up the party with a Boston layup, but Bucknell's defense stood strong as the offense produced results with a 7-0 run to end the half up 39-29.
The first three minutes of the third quarter saw just three points from the Terriers. Both teams struggled to find the basket as the defenses came out tough. Coskun broke the Terriers streak with a jumper that the defense followed up with a big stop under the basket. Ella Kreuzer then found her first points of the afternoon with a three to extend Bucknell's lead to 44-32 at the media timeout. Out of the break, about a minute went scoreless before the Terriers found two points off of free-throws. Coskun then banked in a jumper and after a defensive stop, Kreuzer drained her second three of the game to make it 49-34 with just about two minutes left in the quarter. Boston ended the quarter with a 4-0 run to close the gap to 11 with one quarter to go.
The fourth quarter opened with McLaughlin going 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. Coskun answered with a jumper, but the Terriers then went on a seven-point run to make it a five-point game at the media timeout with 7:26 remaining in regulation. Out of the break, Coskun found a difficult layup to extend the lead to seven. The next basket came over a minute later as Coskun found the basket once again to make it a 55-46 game at the next timeout with 4:31 remaining. Out of the break, Kreuzer forced a turnover and banked in a three off her steal. A few missed opportunities later, Coskun and Zemitis found back-to-back layups to extend the Bison's run to 11-0. The Terriers found back-to-back buckets before the buzzer sounded, but it wasn't enough as the Bison took a 62-51 victory.
Bucknell is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. in Sojka Pavilion.
