Bucknell at a Glance
• Bucknell remains road bound this weekend when the Bison travel to historic West Point to face the Army Black Knights. The dual was moved from Sunday to Saturday to deference to the incoming snowstorm.Â
• Intermat ranks half of the Bison lineup. Myles Takats (174) slots the highest at #19. Noah Mulvaney (165) and Dillon Bechtold (197) are tied for #21. Mulvaney moved up a spot while Bechtold plunged from tenth after a 1-2 performance at the Davidson Duals. Lucas Lawler (285) and Dylan Chappell (141) remain planted at #30 and #31 respectively.Â
• Dylan Chappell (141) entered 2025-26 with 88 career wins and the fifth-year senior added three to his ledger at the Navy Classic, picked up a victory in the Wisconsin dual, added three more at the Bucknell Quad, and notched four victories at the Midlands Championships. He reached 100 on Jan. 4 against LIU, scoring a pin against Carter Pack. Chappell became the first Bison grappler to reach the 100-win milestone since Kurt Phipps (133) earned number 100 against No. 16 Anthony Noto (Lock Haven) on Jan. 30, 2025. He went 3-0 at the Davidson Duals and is three wins away from tying for 11th in program history.Â
• Bucknell posted its third straight top 25 recruiting class, providing an even greater pool of talent for the program. The depth has been on display with the Bison taking nearly every ranked foe to the bitter end, routing Hofstra, LIU, and Morgan State, and performing well at the Navy Classic. At the Midlands Championships, the team finished third for its highest finish in program history at the competition.Â
• The Bison have needed every drop of depth with injuries preventing the full lineup from competing together more than once.Â
• The first NCAA Top 33 Coaches Ranking will be released on Jan. 29. The Bison should have five wrestlers in its lists along with several other grapplers having an outside chance for entry.Â
• Bucknell sits at 71-49 in matches during duals and outscored opponents 281-173. The Bison win big and lose small.Â
• Noah Mulvaney (165) is 18-3 in matches and a sparkling 12-0 in duals this season.Â
• Head coach Dan Wirnsberger is in his 20th season with the Bison and his 21th year leading the program since its revival in 2005.Â
A Look Back at the Davidson Duals
• Bucknell went 2-1 at the competition, defeating Davidson 39-9 and Brown 24-16, and losing 20-19 to North Dakota State on a tiebreaker.Â
• It was the Battle of the Bison during the Bucknell-NDSU dual.Â
• Both teams won five matches and were knotted at 19-19 but the tiebreaker criteria of pins fell in NDSU's favor.Â
• The Bison bounced back for a massive 39-9 romping over the host school. Bucknell won eight of the ten matches.Â
• The Orange & Blue finished off former EIWA foe Brown in a 24-16 performance.Â
• Four wrestlers posted 3-0 days: Dylan Chappell (141), Noah Mulvaney (165), Myles Takats (174), and Tyler Bienus (184). Bienus won Bison of the Week for his 3-0 record, which included a ranked win.Â
Scouting Army/Series History
• The Black Knights of the Hudson are 1-4 on the season and 1-0 in EIWA play. Army's losses have all come to ranked or now-ranked foes and its EIWA victory was a 22-17 win over American. The service academy has focused on open competitions over duals.Â
• Intermat ranks five Army wrestlers with three in the teens.Â
• Assuming full health, there will be four ranked matches on Saturday and three of them will be rematches from last year's dual. Bucknell went 3-0 in those matches. Chappell (141) defeated Basile, Mulvaney (165) vanquished Filipowicz, and Bechtold (197) edged Frable.Â
• Bucknell defeated No. 21 Army 21-13 last year for the Bison's first ranked win in a decade.Â
• Army leads the all-time series 18-5. The Bison of the Susquehanna last won in West Point in 2017. Â
A Look Ahead
• Bucknell welcomes local rival Lock Haven on Jan. 29 to Davis Gym for a renewal of the I-80 Romp.Â
