TULSA, Okla. -- Bucknell's Amar Tahirovic dropped his opening match in the 64-player main draw of the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Tahirovic, No. 43 in the ITA men's singles rankings, fell 6-3, 6-4 to TCU's No. 106 Duncan Chan. The Bison senior will now move into the consolation bracket, where he can still play his way through into one of the 10 qualifying spots for the NCAA Singles Championship. The eight quarterfinalists and two consolation play-ins receive NCAA bids.Â
Chan, a junior who was a regular in the lineup for TCU's run to the national championship match last spring, was coming off singles and doubles victories at the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco earlier this month. He came up with timely service breaks in both sets on Wednesday. Tahirovic was serving at 3-4 in the first set when Chan broke serve to go up 5-3. Tahirovic had a break-point of his own in the next game, but Chan used two strong serves take the final two points and close out the set.
Tahirovic went up 3-2 in the second set before Chan held and then broke serve to go up 4-3. The match was briefly delayed due to a light rain shower before Chan closed out the match.Â
Chan will play Columbia's Nicolas Kotzen in the Round of 32, while Tahirovic awaits his next opponent.Â
