LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell head softball coach Sarah Caffrey announced today that she is stepping down from her post after five seasons at the helm, effective June 13.
"The decision to step away and pursue an opportunity outside of coaching is not one that I made lightly," said Caffrey. "Bucknell has given me so much: opportunity, purpose, growth, and most importantly, a family. I will always be proud of what we built together, and I'm deeply grateful for the trust and support I've received along the way. The coaches, players, parents, alumni, and my staff have been some of the most meaningful relationships that I have had in my life. My experience at Bucknell will leave a lasting impact on me, and I will always be rooting for the Bison anywhere I go."
Under Caffrey's leadership, the Bison softball team qualified for the four-team Patriot League Tournament in each of the past three seasons, and they defeated higher-seeded teams in the postseason in both 2024 and 2025. Caffrey coached 10 All-Patriot League players and seven Academic All-Patriot League honorees, and her 72 wins rank fourth in team history.
Caffrey's teams consistently excelled academically. In 2022-23, the team's combined grade-point average of 3.71 ranked ninth nationally.
Caffrey was a standout pitcher at Jacksonville University, where she graduated as the program's all-time leader in wins and strikeouts. She was selected as the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year. Caffrey had been the lead assistant coach at Penn State for five seasons before she was appointed head coach at Bucknell in August 2020.
A national search will be conducted to identify Bucknell's ninth head softball coach.
