Baseball Falls to Lafayette in Both Games of a Doubleheader

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team dropped two extra-inning games to Lafayette, 2-1 and 3-2, at Depew Field on Sunday afternoon. It was a pitcher's duel all day between the two teams, but Lafayette ultimately came away with the clutch hits to come out top.
Bucknell (11-18, 3-7 PL) managed just three runs on seven hits between the two games. Lafayette (9-24, 6-6 PL) scored its five runs on 12 hits on the day. The Bison led midway through both games, but the Leopards came from behind to win twice.
Senior Tyler O'Neill and Lafayette starter Joe Skapinetz gave the fans an epic showdown in Game 1 as both righties got through seven innings on the bump with 10 strikeouts apiece. Freshman Everett Garber tossed a season-high five innings with a career-high six strikeouts, but the Bison bats never got going in Game 2.
Senior Tyler Dunn and junior Michael Trommer each had a base hit in both games. Trommer delivered a big RBI triple to get the Bison on the board late in Game 1. Dunn extended his on-base streak to 22 games as the first baseman drew a walk in both games and was hit by a pitch.
Errors proved costly for both teams as only four of the eight total runs in the game were earned. Both of Lafayette's runs in the 2-1 Game 1 victory were unearned.
Game 1: Lafayette 2, Bucknell 1 (9 inn.)
O'Neill was lights out for eight innings, allowing just an unearned run on three hits. O'Neill retired the first 11 batters of the game before Lafayette got a runner on board with a single. Lafayette's Skapinetz and reliever Owen Basso shut the Bison down late in the game, retiring the last 10 batters of the game.
The Bison broke through on Skapinetz in the bottom of the fifth inning as Dunn walked followed by Trommer's triple to make it 1-0. Trommer laced a ball through the right side, rolling all the way to the right field wall as the outfield was shifted.
The Leopards answered right back to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth. A dropped fly ball put a runner on second to start the inning, and Lafayette's second hit of the game rolled down the third base line into left field for a double. The Leopards threatened to take the lead with a single into left, but sophomore Chris Morabito showed off his arm with a dart to home to toss out the runner.
Both teams went three-up, three-down in the seventh and eighth innings before Lafayette rallied in the top of the ninth. Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann got a quick out before a single put a runner at first. Adelmann induced a double-play ball, but an error resulted in no outs on the play. A single by Jack Mislan brought the run home, and a walk loaded the bases before Adelmann stranded all three runners.
Game 2: Lafayette 3, Bucknell 2 (8 inn.)
Lafayette got on the board first in Game 2 after a second-inning rally. A double led off the inning, and Bode Grieve drove in the run with a single. Grieve stole second, but Garber stranded him with two strikeouts.
Bucknell's big inning came in the third as Dunn and senior Billy Kender drew walks with one out. With two outs and runners at second and third, junior Ryan Facinelli chopped a ground ball down the third baseline, making it a tough play for the third baseman. Facinelli beat the throw as it went past the first baseman, and another run came in to make it 2-1.
A wild top of the fifth inning saw the Leopards tie the game 2-2. A one-out triple put a runner at third, and Lafayette attempted a squeeze bunt. Trommer sprang into action quickly and flipped the ball home for an easy out. A failed pick-off attempt moved the runner from first to third with two outs, and a single brought home the tying run.
Lafayette led off the top of the eighth with a single, and a bunt and a ground out moved the runner to third. It was Mislan again who came up big, hitting a ground ball to deep short but beating the throw for an infield single to make it 3-2.
Trommer gave the Bison some life in the bottom of the eighth with a single into left field. The runner got to second base, but a ground ball to the left side set up an easy out at third base to get the lead runner before a strikeout ended the game.
The Bison are back in action tomorrow with another doubleheader against Lehigh at Depew Field, starting at 12 p.m.
