Baseball Uses Eight-Run Frame to Win Home Series Finale Over Army

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team used an eight-run fourth inning to take its home series finale from Army with a 10-6 win at the newly dedicated Depew Field at Marren Park on Sunday afternoon.
Bucknell (16-26, 8-14 PL) inched closer to the Patriot League playoff picture after two big wins this weekend. Lehigh took two of three games from Navy to move to 10-12 in the PL, and Lafayette was swept by Holy Cross to move into a tie in fifth place at 8-14. Army (20-22, 14-10 PL) sealed its position in third place after the weekend slate. Lehigh holds the head-to-head tie breaker over Bucknell, winning the season series over the Bison. Lehigh takes on Holy Cross, needing just a win to eliminate the Bison from playoff contention. The Bison will need to sweep Lafayette and have Lehigh get swept next weekend to squeeze into the playoffs.
Senior Billy Kender's three-run triple into the right-center field gap in Bucknell's eight-run inning proved to be the winning runs. Trailing 3-0, three singles loaded the bases with one out to start the fourth inning for the Bison. Freshman John Calabrese drew a walk to get the Bison on the board before a two-run single by Luke Nascimento tied the game 3-3.
Senior Matt Alexander roped a single through the ride side to score Calabrese to give the Bison the lead. A walk by senior Brady Karp reloaded the bases, setting up Kender's triple to extend the lead to 7-1. Senior Tyler Dunn added another run with a hard-hit ball down the right field line for a double.
Senior Nick Mulvey gave a career-high five innings on the mound in just his third start of the season and his second win. Army scored one run in each of the first three innings, but two of them were unearned.
Mulvey shut down the Black Knights in the fourth and fifth innings to maintain the Bison lead. The Black Knights got its first two batters on board, but a great pick off throw to second by sophomore Luke Nascimento got the lead runner out. Mulvey then struck out two batters to end the frame and retired the side in order in the fifth to end his day.
Army got back in the ballgame with a with a three-run sixth inning. The Black Knights got back to work offensively with a two-out rally, going for three consecutive hits to score its three runs.
Bucknell tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 10-6. Calabrese and Fluharty sat at first and third, and a stolen base by Calabrese caused chaos. The Black Knights attempted to throw behind Fluharty at third on the steal, but the throw hit Fluharty and went into foul territory to bring both runs home.
Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann shut the door with 2.1 scoreless innings in relief with five strikeouts. Adelmann relieved freshman AJ Murray in the seventh, getting a punch out to strand a runner at first. Adelmann retired the side in order in the eighth, but things got interesting in the ninth as Army got the tying run to the plate.
Adelmann struck out the side in the ninth, but a throwing error on a dropped third strike for what would have been the third out kept the Black Knights alive. A single and a walk loaded the bases and, but Adelmann forced a ground ball to Alexander at third who made a great charging play to end the game.
Sophomore Billy Fluharty was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Kender and Dunn each had two hits in the game. Kender had a three-RBI game for the Bison and Nascimento went for two RBIs.
It was a messy game with seven total errors. Bucknell overcame its five errors with several great defensive plays in the field, including two double plays. The Bison offense stayed hot after yesterday's win, notching 10 hits. Army scored its six runs on 12 hits, and the Bison pitching staff did well to strand 12 runners.
Prior to the game, Bucknell and the baseball program hosted the Marren family and Depew family for a ceremony to rededicate the stadium to Depew Field at Marren Park.
Bucknell finishes the season with a three-game set at Lafayette, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Kamine Stadium.
