- The Bucknell baseball team heads to Easton this weekend for its regular season finale against Lafayette. The series kicks off with a doubleheader on Saturday before the series finale on Sunday.
- Path to the Playoffs: Bucknell will need a three-game sweep over Lafayette along with Lehigh (10-12 PL) being swept by Holy Cross this weekend to make the playoffs. Lafayette needs to win at least two games and finish with as good as or a better record than Lehigh. Lehigh sits two games ahead of BU and holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. Lafayette won the season series over Lehigh to hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
- Bucknell is coming off an exciting weekend where they took two of three games from Army. Bucknell picked up a big 8-3 Senior Day win on Saturday, then followed up with a thrilling 10-6 win on Sunday after a beautiful ceremony to rededicate the stadium to Depew Field at Marren Park.
- The Bison dropped a heartbreaker in Game 1 on Friday, falling 4-1 in 10 innings. Senior Tyler O'Neill had his longest career outing on the mound, going 9.2 innings with 149 pitches. Bucknell and Army were deadlocked at 1-1 for five innings after sophomore Chris Morabito's 420-foot home run tied the game in the fourth. Army loaded the bases in the 10th, and a two-out wild pitch brought home the winning run. A two-run double then gave the Black Knights insurance to pull away to a 4-1 victory.
- The Bison began to click offensively in Game 2, taking a big 7-1 lead after five innings. BU scored four runs in the third, one run in the fourth, and two more in the fifth. Senior Ben Magovern had one his best starts of the season, allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings. Hadley Maxwell came on in relief in the seventh, closing out the game with 2.1 no-hit innings.
- Army led 3-0 after three innings in Game 3 before the Bison exploded for an eight-run fourth inning to flip the game on its head. Senior Nick Mulvey had his longest career outing, going five innings with just one earned run allowed. Army cut the lead to 8-6 in the sixth, but sophomore Jonathan Adelmann used five punchouts to shut the door in 2.1 innings of relief.
- Tyler O'Neill ranks third in the PL with a 3.08 ERA in 11 starts this season. O'Neill sits third on Bucknell's all-time strikeouts list with 221 strikeouts, 17 behind second-place Connor Van Hoose '18.
- O'Neill leads the PL with 76.0 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .206 off the right-hander, ranking first in the PL, and he ranks third with 64 strikeouts. He has only walked 22 batters this season. O'Neill is climbing several other career program records for the Bison. O'Neill is 20th in appearances (50), third all-time in games started (40) and fifth in innings pitched (264.1).
- Senior Tyler Dunn leads the Bison with a .327 batting average. Reaching base in every ga,e over the weekend, Dunn extended his on-base streak to 35 games — all 35 games he has played in this season. The first baseman was 3-for-12 with two RBIs and three walks in the series against Army. Dunn had a big RBI double in Games 2 and 3, driving in a run in Bucknell's four-run third inning and another in the eight-run fourth inning.
- Dunn is third in the Patriot League with a .985 OPS and is slashing .319/.491/.494, all of which rank eighth or higher in the PL. His .494 on-base percentage ranks second in the league.
- Dunn is climbing several career program records this season. The four-year starter ranks seventh in games played (175), seventh in games started (169), eighth in at-bats (616), 15th in hits (169), 13th in RBIs (111), 3rd in walks (96), eighth in hit-by-pitches (24), 18th in doubles (32), and fourth in sacrifice flies (10). Dunn has drawn 37 walks this season, ranking third in program history for a single season.
- Freshman John Calabrese sports a .316 batting average, and was the Patriot League Rookie of the Week and Bison of the Week honoree three weeks ago. Calabrese made his debut with a pinch-hit single against FAU and has become a mainstay in the BU lineup. In 29 games with 24 starts, Calabrese is slashing .319/.367/.465. Calabrese had three hits in the series with Army, and kicked off the scoring in Bucknell's eight-run inning with a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run.
- Senior second baseman Billy Kender leads the team with 39 hits. Kender has 12 extra-base hits and 22 RBIs. Kender broke Game 3 open with a bases-clearing triple to put the Bison up 7-3. He had four hits and a walk in the series.
- Sophomore Billy Fluharty had a big weekend, going 6-for-13 with an RBI and two runs scored. Fluharty was 3-for-4 in Game 3. In Game 2, Fluharty showed off his speed, scoring from second base on a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
- Senior Matt Alexander was back in the lineup, making his first career starts at third base in Games 2 and 3. Alexander was 2-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI. Despite two errors, Alexander had nine assists in the two games he played in, making tough play after another.
- Senior Brady Karp and Junior Ryan Facinelli each had three hits in the series. Karp had two RBIs and Facinelli had one. Sophomore Luke Nascimento had two hits and three RBIs, tying the game on Sunday 3-3 with a two-run single in the fourth inning.
- Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann has a 3.00 ERA in 19 appearances. After a rough outing the weekend prior at Lehigh, Adelmann bounced back with a big performance in Game 3, striking out five batters in 2.1 innings. Adelmann has four saves this season and has struck out 41 batters in 30.0 innings. In 16 of his 19 appearances this season, he has not allowed an earned run. Â
- Senior Ben Magovern ranks eighth in the PL with a 5.06 ERA. Magovern only struck out three batters, but induced 10 ground outs in his longest outing of the season in Game 2. In six of his 10 starts, he has allowed two earned runs or less. In 48.0 innings, he has 37 strikeouts and 19 walks.
- Senior Nick Mulvey has been excellent in his last two outings on the mound. Last weekend at Lehigh, Mulvey got the start, and allowed one run in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. On Sunday, Mulvey went five innings, and allowed three runs, two of which were unearned. Mulvey struck out four batters, including three over scoreless fourth and fifth innings to end his day.
- Hadley Maxwell was excellent in Game 2 with 2.1 no-hit innings. Maxwell has nine appearances this season allowing no runs. His 5.10 is fourth on the team, and he has 30 punch outs in 30.0 innings.
- Through 42 games, the Bison have a .234 team batting average and a 7.37 team ERA. Opponents are batting .287 and have a 5.03 ERA against BU.
- The Bison are 2-2 against ACC foes. Bucknell won a single game against Pitt, and took Game 2 from Virginia Tech in its opening series.
- Against Pitt, seven Bison pitchers combined for a four-hit, 17-strikeout effort. The 17 strikeouts were four shy of the team record of 21, set in 1956 against Franklin & Marshall (all by Don Richards) and in 1989 against Wilkes.
- Head coach Scott Heather is in his 13th season at the helm, passing Bill Lane (1946-57) as the third-longest tenured coach in program history. Heather's 239 career wins are second-most in team history, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Gene Depew (591).
- Lafayette is 13-33Â on the season with an 8-14 record in Patriot League play. The Leopards lost its first 10 games of the season before picking up a win over UMass Lowell. Their second win came in a 5-3 upset over Penn State, who the Bison fell to 14-3 earlier this season.
- Lafayette has lost each of its last six Patriot League matchups, getting swept by Army and Holy Cross. Lafayette took the first two games in the season-series in a doubleheader sweep over the Bison at Depew Field, winning in extra innings in both games. Lafayette took the first game 2-1 before winning the second game 3-2.
- Lafayette's .272 team batting average this season ranks second in the league, averaging 5.7 runs per game. The pitching staff has an 8.17 ERA and opponents are batting .325. Lafayette leads the PL with 31 home runs.
- The top three batters in the Leopards' lineup rival any team in the Patriot League. Easton Brenner is slashing .350/.500/.503 and ranks second in the PL with a 1.003 OPS. Brenner has three home runs, 49 hits and 30 RBIs. He has drawn 35 walks and gotten plunked 13 times with only 22 strikeouts.
- Ethan Swidler is batting .339/.509/.452 with a league-high 58 hits. He leads the team with 33 RBIs, and leads the team with 14 doubles. Swidler is second on the team with five home runs Alex Barrist is batting .291/.411/.363 with 28 RBIs and 46 hits.
- Michael Zarillo and Matt Colella enter the weekend with 49 and 44 hits, respectively. Zarillo has launched five home runs this season and has 32 RBIs. Colella has 27 RBIs. Â
- Joe Skapinetz leads the Leopards with a 5.62 ERA. Skapinetz is 1-6 in 11 starts, tossing a complete game in a 4-3 win over Navy. He has a PL-leading 70 strikeouts in just 57.2 innings.
- Tristan Helmick has a 6.38 ERA in nine starts and 11 appearances. Helmick has 46 strikeouts in 48.0 innings. Trace Florio has a 6.67 ERA in 11 starts and 12 appearances. Florio has two complete games this year, one coming in an 8-1 win over Lehigh and another in a 4-0 loss at Lehigh.
- Mike Romano leads the Leopards out of the bullpen with a 5.67 ERA in 17 appearances with four saves. In 27.0 innings, he has 25 strikeouts to just nine walks.
- Lafayette leads the all-time series with Bucknell 126-89-1, dating back to 1895. Lafayette won the first eight games played before the Bison go its first win in 1906.
- The Bison have gotten the better of the Leopards over the previous two seasons, going 8-2 in that span. Last season, Bucknell took all five games to sweep the season-series with Lafayette.
