LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team fell to Army 4-1 in a 10-inning heartbreaker on Friday afternoon at Depew Field. Tyler O'Neill was excellent for 9.2 innings on the mound, but the Black Knights took control with a three-run top of the 10th to take Game 1.
Tied 1-1 after nine innings, O'Neill took the mound again for the 10th inning. A one-out single and a two-out single put the winning run in scoring position. With a 3-2 count, a pitch clock violation turned into a walk to load the bags, and the winning run came home on a wild pitch. The next batter doubled off of sophomore Jonathan Adelmann in relief, bringing home both runs to make it a 4-1 game.
Six different Bison went for a hit in the ballgame, and BU walked five times. Bucknell (14-26, 6-14 PL) ultimately left seven runners on base and ran into three double plays. Army (20-20, 14-9 PL) turned two up the middle in both the ninth and 10th innings to halt Bison rallies.
It was a clean game as neither side made an error. Bucknell and Army were both sharp defensively, making tough plays throughout the ballgame.
Sophomore Chris Morabito launched his third home run of the season with a no-doubter over the scoreboard in right-center field. His solo shot tied the game 1-1 on a two-out swing in the fourth inning.
Army scored early in the second for a 1-0 lead before getting its first hit in the fourth. O'Neill struggled with his control early on, surrendering all four walks in the first two innings. Army loaded the bases with one out in the second before a fielder's choice brought a run home. O'Neill then got the final out to limit the damage, and the only other walk he surrendered was the pitch clock violation in the 10th.
O'Neill finished with a final line of 9.2 innings, five hits, four earned runs and seven strikeouts. Senior Tyler Dunn upped his on base streak to 33 games with two walks. He now has 36 walks this season, tied for third all-time in Bucknell's history for a single season.
Junior Michael Trommer and Morabito both reached base twice. Both players had a hit and drew a walk in the game.
Bucknell falls to three games back of Lehigh after the Mountain Hawks took down Navy on Friday afternoon, and trail Lafayette by two games after the Leopards fell to Holy Cross.
The Bison and Black Knights go head-to-head again for Game 2 tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Bison will celebrate its eight seniors for Senior Day prior to the ballgame.
