Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bucknell baseball team hosts six-time defending Patriot League Champions in Army West Point in its final home series of the year in a big weekend of baseball. On Saturday, Bucknell will honor its eight seniors for Senior Day prior to the game. On Sunday, Depew Field will be rededicated to Depew Field at Marren Park as the Marren Family will honored with a ceremony prior to the game.
- With six games left to play, the Bison sit two games out of a playoff spot behind Lafayette and Lehigh with 8-11 records. Army and Navy are tied in second place with 13-9 record, fighting with a 12-7 Holy Cross for first place. Lafayette opens a three-game series at Holy Cross on Friday, and Lehigh hosts Navy in a three-game series starting on Friday.
- The Bison are coming off of an 11-1 loss at Villanova on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Michael Chiaravallo's first career home run got the Bison back in the game at 3-1, but the Wildcats pulled away with eight runs in the final three innings.
- Bucknell is also coming off a 1-2 weekend where the Bison dropped two of three games to Lehigh.
- The Bison took Game 1 handily as a four-run first inning was all that was needed behind senior Tyler O'Neill's complete-game effort on the mound. A two-run home run by junior Michael Trommer and a two-run triple by sophomore Chris Morabito highlighted the big first inning, and senior Tyler Dunn polished it off with a solo home run later in the game.
- Lehigh came out on top in a tight Game 2. The Bison stormed back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game 4-4, but a go-ahead home run from Dom Patrizzi in the eighth inning gave Lehigh the 5-4 win. The Mountain Hawks offense clicked in Game 3, taking down BU 14-4 in seven innings.
- Lafayette, Lehigh and Bucknell are all battling for the fourth-place spot in the Patriot League. Bucknell is currently in sixth with a 6-13 record — two games back of Lafayette and Lehigh both at 8-11. Holy Cross sits atop of the league with an 12-7 record with Navy and Army both a 0.5 game back at 13-9.
- Tyler O'Neill went all seven innings on the mound in Game 1 on Saturday, allowing just an unearned run on three hits through the first six innings until a single and a home run made it a 7-3 game in the seventh. O'Neill retired the next three batters to end his day with the win and his second complete-game of the year. Â
- Tyler O'Neill ranks second in the PL with a 2.98 ERA in 10 starts this season. O'Neill sits third on Bucknell's all-time strikeouts list with 214 strikeouts, 24 behind second-place Connor Van Hoose '18.
- O'Neill leads the PL with 66.1 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .213 off the right-hander, good for second in the PL, and he ranks third with 57 strikeouts and just 17 walks. O'Neill is climbing several other career program records for the Bison. O'Neill is third all-time in games started (39) and seventh in innings pitched (254.2).
- Senior Tyler Dunn leads the Bison with a .327 batting average. Dunn extended his on-base streak to 32 games — all 32 games he has played in this season. The first baseman was 3-for-8 with two RBIs and four walks in the three-game series at Lehigh. Dunn's Game 1 homer was the third of the season and the sixth of his career.
- Dunn is third in the Patriot League with a 1.003 OPS and is slashing .327/.500/.503, all of which rank seventh or higher in the PL.
- Dunn is climbing several career program records this season. The four-year starter ranks eighth in games played (172), ninth in games started (166), eighth in at-bats (604), 15th in hits (166), 13th in RBIs (109), 3rd in walks (93), eighth in hit-by-pitches (24), 20th in doubles (30), and fourth in sacrifice flies (10). Dunn has drawn 34 walks this season, ranking sixth in program history for a single season.
- Freshman John Calabrese sports a .319 batting average, and was the Patriot League Rookie of the Week and Bison of the Week honoree two weeks ago. Calabrese made his debut with a pinch-hit single against FAU and has become a mainstay in the BU lineup.
- In 26 games with 21 starts, Calabrese is slashing .319/.377/.478. Calabrese is hitting .389 with runners on base and is 8-for-22 with runners in scoring position.
- Junior third baseman Michael Trommer leads the Bison with 37 hits and has a .253 batting average. Trommer leads the Bison and ranks fourth in the PL with 32 RBIs, and ranks eighth with four home runs.
- Senior second baseman Billy Kender is second on the team with 35 hits. Kender has 11 extra-base hits and 19 RBIs. Kender's 20-game on-base streak came to an end on Tuesday against Villanova.
- Junior Ryan Facinelli is fourth on the team with a .242 batting average.
- Michael Chiaravallo was back in the lineup on Tuesday, going for two of Bucknell's three hits in the game. Chiaravallo had six total bases in the game with his home run and a double.
- Sophomore Jonathan Adelmann has a 3.29 ERA in 17 appearances. He entered this past weekend with a team-low 1.73 ERA, but was tagged for five earned runs in Game 3 at Lehigh. He has racked up 36 strikeouts in 37.1 innings.
- Senior Ben Magovern ranks ninth in the PL with a 5.44 ERA The left-hander was tagged for four earned runs on 10 hits in Game 2, but stranded eight runners on base with five strikeouts to keep the Bison in the game. Magovern has allowed just one earned run in his last two starts and has five starts this season with one earned run or less. Magovern ranks ninth in the PL with a 5.44 ERA.
- Freshman AJ Murray has been solid on the mound in recent outings. In Game 3, Murray stopped the bleeding in a four-run third inning with two strikeouts to strand two runners. He then tossed two more scoreless innings to slow down the Lehigh offense. In his last 12.2 innings, he's allowed five earned runs and has 11 strikeouts.
- Through 39 games, the Bison have a .229 team batting average and a 7.76 team ERA. Opponents are batting .291 and have a 5.07 ERA against BU.
- The Bison are 2-2 against ACC foes. Bucknell won a single game against Pitt, and took Game 2 from Virginia Tech in its opening series.
- Against Pitt, seven Bison pitchers combined for a four-hit, 17-strikeout effort. The 17 strikeouts were four shy of the team record of 21, set in 1956 against Franklin & Marshall (all by Don Richards) and in 1989 against Wilkes.
- Head coach Scott Heather is in his 13th season at the helm, passing Bill Lane (1946-57) as the third-longest tenured coach in program history. Heather's 237 career wins are second-most in team history, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Gene Depew (591).
- Army enters this weekend's three-game series with the second-ranked offense and second-ranked pitching staff in the Patriot League. The Black Knights have the league's best defense, sporting a .970 fielding percentage.Â
- Army is batting .271 as a team this season with a .401 slugging percentage. The Black Knights average just over six runs per game. The pitching staff has a 5.21 ERA and opponents are batting .268.
- Jack Quinlan, Thomas Schreck, William Parker and Chris Barr are all batting over .300 for the season. Quinlan is slashing .337/.612/.472 for a league-leading 1.084 OPS. He has 16 extra-base hits and is tied second in the league with five home runs.
- Schreck's .333 average ranks fifth in the PL, and his 40 hits are third-most on the Army squad. He has driven in 25 runs and boasts a .508 slugging percentage and a .435 on-base percentage. William Parker is batting .314/.534/.393. with a team-high 33 RBIs. Along with Quinlan, Parker has five home runs this season.
- Chris Barr is batting .310, and leads the team and the league with 27 stolen bases. Barr ranks fifth in the PL with 49 hits and has walked 21 times. Â
- Addison Ainsworth and John McKillop are both hitting .289 at the plate. Ainsworth has 41 hits, 31 RBIs and has drawn a team-high 24 walks.
- Andrew Berg is 4-2 on the mound with a league-low 2.78 ERA in 11 appearances with eight starts. In 55.0 innings, he has struck out 51 batters and walked 19. He tossed two complete games this season, including a complete-game shutout at Holy Cross earlier this year. Â
- Justin Lehman has a 4.37 ERA in 10 starts. He leads the Black Knights with 59.2 innings pitched and has tossed one complete game this year. Bryce Brownlee has a 7.51 ERA in 11 appearances with 10 starts.
- Joe Valchar has a 2.39 ERA in 26.1 innings. He has made nine appearances with eight starts. He tossed eight shutout innings in a start against Holy Cross earlier this season. Michael Delph has a 3.00 ERA in just four appearances with three starts.
- Army leads the all-time series with Bucknell 95-66, dating back to 1910 where Army took the first ever meeting 7-5.
- Army took both games of a doubleheader from the Bison earlier this season. Bucknell opened the series with a seven-run first inning on two three-run home runs by Michael Trommer and senior Brady Karp before Army staged a comeback for a 14-8 win. Bucknell then fell 9-7 in the second game.
- Army has dominated the Patriot League for the last seven seasons, and has eliminated Bucknell from the Patriot League tournament in each of the previous three seasons. In 2022 and 2023, the Bison to the Black Knights in the PL Championship. Last season, the Bison fell in heartbreaking fashion in the semifinals. Bucknell took game one and led games two and three in the late innings before the Black Knights staged a pair of comebacks.
- Bucknell travels to Lafayette for its final series of the season. With Lafayette just two games ahead of the Bison, next weekend's series could be decisive for the Patriot League playoff picture. The Bison and Leopards open with a doubleheader on Saturday, then play its season-finale on Sunday. Â Â
