LEWISBURG, Pa.- Bucknell softball (13-24, 4-10 Patriot League) swept Colgate (13-27, 3-8 Patriot League) Saturday in a doubleheader, winning 2-0 and 7-4. The Bison's victories were powered by a pair of complete games hurled by senior pitchers Savannah Jones and Madison Roukey. The Orange & Blue have won four straight games to stay alive in the Patriot League Tournament race.
Game One Recap
Jones started in the circle and pitched one of her finest games in a Bucknell uniform. The senior allowed only two scattered hits and did not allow a single free pass. She struck out four Raiders.
Colgate's only decent scoring chance arrived in the second inning. Lily Haluska singled but was erased by Mia Cascio's fielder's choice. Alexis Romero sacrificed her to second and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jones obtained a lineout to end the threat.
Bucknell used the momentum from the near-miss to score in its second frame. Shea Malone singled and MaKenzie Hilling was hit by a pitch. Molly Lawson worked the pitcher and delivered the RBI single for the 1-0 lead.
The Bison added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Haley Speicher worked a walk and advanced to second on Jones's grounder. Marissa Rapino fouled out. Brooke Popella stepped up and smashed a double, scoring Speicher.
Jones retired the final six Raider batters for the 2-0 victory and the tenth win of her career.
Game Two Recap
Madison Roukey received the call and only suffered one major hiccup in the third inning, to win her 23rd game, tenth in Bucknell history.
Bucknell blitzed Colgate for three runs in the first inning. Speicher singled but was eliminated by Ava Aguilar's fielder's choice. Jones singled through the right side. Popella grounded out to the pitcher, who instead of throwing to third, went to first. The error proved crucial as Shea Malone singled in Aguilar and Jones. Hilling singled to center field, setting up first and second. A ball went in the dirt and the Bison runners were caught in-between when Colgate's catcher grabbed the sphere. Hilling was the selected victim but the Bison runner stayed alive long enough for Malone to score before she was tagged out.
Colgate tied the score at 3-3 in the third inning. Roukey obtained two quick outs before allowing a four-pitch walk. Jillian Herbst slammed an RBI triple to right center field. Quinn Livesay singled up the middle, scoring Herbst. Haluska tripled over right fielder Shea Malone's head, tying the game.
The Bison rallied for the 4-3 lead in its third chance. Jones and Popella singled. Malone's fielder's choice advanced Jones to third base and Hilling's sacrifice fly scored her fellow senior.
The Orange & Blue added three insurance runs in the fourth inning. Angelina Seropian walked and Nicole Lioumis pinch ran for her. Bella Radican and Speicher singled to load the bases. Aguilar smashed a single up the middle, scoring two runs. Jones followed up with an RBI scoring for the 7-3 football score.
Colgate got one run back in the sixth inning. Cascio singled and Romero hit Colgate's third triple of the day obtaining the RBI. Molly Lawson collected the unassisted double play, ending the inning.
The rain and lightning arrived before the seventh inning, forcing a 45-minute delay. Colgate obtained two quick singles after the weather ceased. Roukey remained calm, gaining three quick outs with the final one occuring on a swinging strikeout.
