LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison (9-24, 0-10 Patriot League) lost a 3-0 lead in a 6-4 defeat to Keystone State rival Lafayette Leopards (7-23, 5-5 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon. The Orange & Blue started strong but errors and miscues allowed the Leopards to forge ahead.
Savannah Jones started in the circle and threw three perfect innings. Her pitching held the Leopards spellbound as the Easton team could not make solid contact against the veteran right-handed pitcher.
Bucknell struck for three runs in the third inning. MaKenzie Hilling, the program's record holder for career walks, drew a free pass and Marissa Rapino hit a hard single off Lafayette's Makayla Lecky. Kate Dailor was inserted as a pinch runner for Hilling. Brooke Popella drove in Dailor with a sharp single, forcing Lecky from the game. Lafayette called upon Marisa Powell. Shea Malone greeted her with an RBI single. Jones reached on a fielder's choice when Popella was thrown out at home. The Bison's third run occurred when Jones stole second and the second baseman dropped the cut off throw.
Lafayette rebounded for five runs in the next inning. Mary Grace O'Neill was almost called out on strikes but the umpire disagreed. Given new life, the star hitter, batting over .430, struck for a triple. Kate Harrington drove her in with a single. Emma Ahlborn walked and she and Harrington advanced on a wild pitch. Caroline Hall single's scored both runners and tied the game. Regan Dillon singled and Madison Roukey entered the circle. Roukey got Maggie Klug to strike out. Unfortunately, Bucknell's fielding suffered. Popella and Nicole Lioumis committed back-to-back errors, scoring two Lafayette runs.
The Leopards added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Roukey plucked Ahlborn with two outs. Hall's fly-out fell between Skye Perez and Marissa Rapino, advancing Ahlborn to third base. Regan Dillon singled to a diving Popella, scoring Ahlborn.
Bucknell answered the run in its frame. Popella singled to start the action. Malone's single advanced Popella to third base. Jones drew a walk and Powell's pitch went wild, allowing Popella to score. Powell recovered to strike out Lioumis and her sister Reagan Powell.
Malone singled in the seventh inning but Basso's grounder was collected for the final out.
Bucknell and Lafayette complete the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
