Baseball Falls to Maine 4-1 in Chaotic Ending to Game 2

*Game 3 on Sunday, March 9, has been moved to a 12 p.m. start time*
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Tyler Dunn's first home run in nearly two years broke Maine's bid for a perfect game and a scoreless deadlock in the eighth inning, but three runs for the Black Bears in the top of the ninth on an error capped off a chaotic finish that ended with Maine taking Game 2 by a 4-1 score. Â
Maine's starter Caleb Ley was untouchable on the afternoon, retiring all 18 batters faced with nine strikeouts. The Bison finally got on the board with Dunn's home run in the eighth, and the Bison stranded two base runners to head to the ninth with a fresh lead and the only run of the ball game.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Brody Rasmussen lifted a long fly ball that was dropped in centerfield to bring all three runs home. A base hit scored Rasmussen from second and the Bison went down in order in the ninth end the game.
It was another pitcher's duel after yesterday's 3-2 final. Senior Ben Magovern and Ley were dominant as they both went six innings without allowing a run. Magovern struck out six batters and allowed five hits, three of which were infield hits on weak contact.
Magovern was excellent with runners on base, stranding six runners. Junior Hadley Maxwell took over on the mound in the seventh, stranding a runner at third and two more in the eighth inning.
Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth for Maine before the three-run error. An RBI single to left field in the next at-bat gave the Black Bears some extra insurance and a 4-1 lead.
Dunn's no-doubter to right field was the fourth homer of his career and his first since April 2, 2023 at Army. Senior Matt Alexander had the only other Bison hit on an eighth-inning single to left. Junior Garrison Bullock drew a walk in the inning, but the Bison stranded both runners.
